Ken Norton W split 15 Jimmy Young

yes, young was clearly stolen, and he did beat shavers in the second fight and he did beat ali too. young would beat larry holmes in 76-77 as well.

 

I thought Young won it. Bodypunchers have never been given any slack when it comes to scoring. You would have to give Kenny a lot of credit for that to give him the nod. It was not an ideal match for Norton, but how else was he going to get another Ali bout?

Hell no I don't agree with the decision. Jimmy Young was screwed over in that fight just as he was against Ali. This particular thread topic has had many incarnations in recent times, but I don't tire of pointing out that Young was badly jobbed by the powers that be and crooked officials on two very well known occasions..and it had everything to do with his style and his somewhat "negative" approach, which was by the way, VERY successful in making the big stars of the sport look like clumsy oafs...even Ali.

The margin of victory wasn't great..maybe two or three points, but Young deserved the decision over Norton, That's TWO times that Young was screwed out of the heavyweight title.

 

Very very close fight. I just about shaded it for Norton. Could have gone either way,and I'd have had no problems if Jimmy had been given the nod.

 

Makes you wonder what wouldm have happened if Jimmy had been given it. I doubt whether he'd have gone downhill so suddenly like he did. Just think,in 1977,Young beat Foreman,and ran Norton to a photofinish,then loses twice to Ossie Ocasio,less than a year later :shock:

 

Yes, I don't think Jimmy would have declined like he did. He would have been inspired by the title...and every heavyweight in the world would have come out of the woodwork breathing fire and brimstone...so confident that they could beat Young. That, of course, would have played right into Youngs hands. Just more big slow, sloppy, overconfident heavyweights that he would have made fools of.

 

I had it for Norton close. Seem to recall Young didn't do a lot in the 15th round.

 

Stevie, like you, I just had it a shade, but for Young. I never went around saying, 'robbery' or anything like that because it was very close. Also, the AP's scorecard was 143-142 for Norton, so it was anyone's fight. I will say this, that particular style seemed to be Norton's bread and butter. He would fail against the big sluggers, but the boxers without that big haymaker he always fought to the wire (Ali, Young, Holmes).
