Nonsense. Liston was old, but in-shape and was kickin' some ass on Leo Martin before getting waxed in round 9... Liston simply got caught and stopped... It was a good fight on ABC television in '69... MR.BILL:hat
i said before , it was an example about other old fighter, and my point was the age was not an excuse to be knocked out by a bum who weighed 190 pounds, and martin was his former sparring partner, so liston knew him perfectly.
combat, Leotis was a 199 lb. solid guy at age 30. Plus, he knew Sonny, as well as Sonny knew him. The confidence builder was in Sweden, back in early 1967. Leotis handled Sonny very easily in several sparring sessions and a couple of Scandanavian Exhibition bouts. Your correct on an old Sonny, as in 1969 he was 42.
Sonny did burn himself out in that fight. He was a good 7-Round fighter at that time. And his defense,,,,,,,,,,,,,there was none.
When, Joe Frazier said he wasn't interested in fighting Sonny, and it was apparent that Jimmy Ellis was going to fight Joe Frazier, there wasn't many 'apples in the basket to choose from'. The newly created N.A.B.F. Title was a stop-gap fight that Sonny trained for, but mentally wasn't prepared. It was just money.
Martin was considered good enough to be in the WBA Heavyweight Eliminator Tournament, and bum is a word ,too freely thrown around when referring to brave men , by "non -combatants". Liston knew Martin perfectly, and likewise, Martin knew Liston perfectly. Sonny was an old man chugging along when Martin fought him .Sonny did well for the first few rounds but gradually ran out of petrol and began freewheeling, he walked into a series of heavy shots and went to the floor, it happens to all fighters,if they stay around long enough. Oh,and Martin weighed 199lbs for the fight.
well, be serious , honestly do you think that martin would go more than 3 rounds against the old foreman who faced evaner or cooney? no frucking way. and it is an excuse because 6 months later liston destroyed chuck wepner... the age is not matter , if he lose by ud, fine, but he was destroyed by a bum, yes, martin in the history of boxing was a bum, obviously he would kick my ass, but he was a bum compared with any great fighter.
Sonny Liston would have a chance with 'Smokin Joe' for 5 Rounds, tops. And, Leotis Martin is something of a legend in the Philly War Gyms. Check,,,,,,,with Jack McKinney (Philadelphia Boxing Writer). The problem with Leotis, he had no 'Star Power'.
Can you make a post without mentioning George, ****ing, Foreman? Everett Martin ,17-7 -1 went 10rds with Foreman, 6 months before George beat Cooney . Martin had lost 6 of his last 10 fights, 2 by ko , 1 by 170lbs Tony Willis who had just 10 fights. Leotis Martin would have beaten him inside the distance ,no bother.
the guy who was competent against prime holyfield, who destroyed bert cooper, qawei, gerry cooney and michael moorer, who was stolen against shanon briggs? , please go to the bed, drunk. in 4 rounds ko.
couldn't you tell that he was bleeding in the mouth.. and was gassed badly... Martin was setting him up with the jab and was looking for the right hand because he noticed Liston was tired
