He also said black men who marry or sleep with white women should be put to death.

That kind of thinking goes way beyond simply prefering to stay within "his own kind" (something he certainly didn't practice anyway).

Praying five times a day and worshipping Allah is ISLAM.
Accepting Elijah Muhammad (formerly Elijah Poole) as a prophet, W.D. Fard as God, and believing all Elijah's racist propaganda and tales of space ships and evil scientists who created the white race is ... NOT ISLAM.

The NOI wanted it both ways. "We're just a religion, like all the muslims of the world. Not a hate group", but they spewed hateful stuff and seemed more comfortable with the KKK and Nazis than they did with blacks and whites who believed in mixing.

    They are the women.

But the NOI's contacts and liaisons with the KKK are pretty well-documented.
Malcolm X himself admitted that he met with KKK leaders at the bequest of Elijah Muhammad. They had common goals.

Well, the US government had locked most of the mafia who had controlled boxing up. Carbo and Palermo were in jail, convicted and imprisoned long before Clay beat Liston.
Anyway, whoever managed and promoted Sonny Liston ended up with a huge slice of Cassius Clay. This has been extensively covered in recent threads. If Liston's group were mob-owned, then Clay was as well, to some extent.
And even the Dundee brothers were mobster-connected.

There was no "instant diminished" involvement following Ali-Liston 1.
In fact, the WBA ended up recognizing Ernie Terrell as champion, and Terrell was rumoured to be largely owned by Chicago mobsters.

Sounds like absolute NOI/Ali propaganda. There have been several mafia-and-boxing stories since then.

Why were the NOI government-backed ?

And do you really think the American Mafia were scared of the NOI ?
The American Mafia probably had a hand in the assassination of John F.Kennedy in 1963, and were certainly working with the CIA since the 1940s, and you expect me to believe they were scared of Herbert Muhammad ?

It's amazing that you actually know the guy. :good
I must have missed you mentioning it earlier.

    That's religion.
Muslims and Jews segregate the women, I expect the orthodox Christians and other churches do too.

    MR. UN,

If I do recall,,,,,,,,when Muhammad Ali was putting up a resistance to fight
Sonny Liston again, it was Bill Faversham who told him, 'that if he didn't go through with the rematch fight, there would be real trouble'.

Inter-Continental Promotions, Inc. were going to make some nice coin for the rematch.

Like you said, the underworld guys connected with Sonny Liston were either in jail, or indicted, or being investigated.
It was time to 'cash in'.

Look what happened to Sonny,,,banished and outcast, and his next appearance,
a 'rinky dink' promotion in Alaska (April 1966) for $11,000.

    JET MAGAZINE, June 1976

"New York Group Plans to Boycott Ali-Norton III Fight"

With charges of 'Uncle Tom' flying through the air, the recently announced
Ali vs. Norton III brawl has become the center of controversey, because
'white promoters' will be used instead of 'Black' promotion 'Superstar Don King'.

Incensed over the absence of King as the promoter of the 'Title Fight' that is estimated to 'gross' between $18 and $20 million dollars, Reverend Al Sharpton, Chairman of the National Youth Movement, charged,
"For Muhammad Ali to turn his back on a Black Promoter (Don King) and to fight for 'white promoters' (Madison Square Garden and Top Rank, Inc.) who endorsed his being stripped of his 'heavyweight title' is the epitome of an insult to the 'Black
    Community".

So Rev. Sharpton has called for a boycott of the title fight.

Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton are scheduled to slug it out on September 27, 1976,
    at New York's Yankee Stadium.

In responding to Sharpton's charges, Ali's manager Herbert Muhammad said that
Don King 'could not just come up with enough MONEY'.

Herbert Muhammad also emphasized, that he had waited several months for
Don King to make a 'deal', and could not wait any longer, because the 'champ'
can not fight after September 30th, due to an upcoming film for which he is contracted.

Herbert Muhammad huffed, 'I make the deal (Don) King doesn't ever make the deal'
'I decide everything, I'm the manager'.

    Muhammad did note that Don King;
'has been one of the most honest promoters I've known'.

    OH,,,,,,,,,,,,'just lovely'

I never said that Liston was mob-controlled. I think the mob saw a 22 year old fighting for the heavyweight belt and thought they could push him around, not realizing what affiliations he has. Just because Carbo went to jail, it doesnt mean the mob ceased to exist does it? So why would they cease to continue to control boxing? Because one man went to jail?

The mafia wasn't scared of the NOI? They nation were allowed to carry assault rifles on the streets. Ask people who were around at the time. Why would mayor Daily have his police go into the ghettos when he could just have the nation do it?

http://www.bizbag.com/Old%20ads/nra.htm - Look at that link. NOI outnumbered the mafia by a lot. How many members can there be in one mafia organization? 100? 500? 1000? 1000 I cant imagine. But the NOI had at least 20 thousand members. Its a mis match

As for Terrell, I dont see anything off level in his match with Ali, and I also dont see him as a very lucrative fighter in comparison to others. Boxing was very lucrative for the mob when they had a grasp on a large part of it. Now they had Ali, the most popular fighter for the next 15 years and they couldnt control him. If the 22 year old Ali had nowhere to turn, but to take the fall in the Liston fight, I can imagine the mob having their hands on the boxing scene for much longer

yea, it is pretty cool to have someone in my family give me the information first hand. I would be skeptical too if I didn't have that advantage of first hand information.

    REZ,

You make some valid points,,,,,,,,,,,but boxing was turning the corner.
The money to be made was on 'closed circuit revenue', and media advertising,
not the 'live gate' attraction anymore.

I'm not sure you know just who controlled the 'closed circuit operations' back then.
T-N-T, Inc. (Television Network Theatre) and Sports Vision, Inc.
    Not 'babes-in-the woods'.

Also, you're not naive enough to think that the 'mob' was just involved in boxing, to
    make cash do you..........

Unless you forgot,,,,,,,,cement, construction unions, trucking, loan-sharking, gambling, prostitution, casinos, and drugs.

As for Muhammad Ali as the 'golden boy',,,,,,,after the Floyd Patterson fight.
The next promotion with George Chuvalo took the 'proverbial bath'.

Firstly - I never said they ceased to be involved in boxing - you did.
They were under attack though, and boxing was never the mainstay of their profits at all, it was just a very minor side concern, a plaything really.

You need to do some research on the American mafia.
They owned politicians, rigged elections, helped assassinate world leaders and carry out coups in foreign countries, owned the unions, owned the gambling, owned the construction business, had power over just about every criminal in the USA.
Sure, the NOI were fanatics and quite tough themselves, but really there's no comparison.

The mob didn't want him to take the fall.
Firstly, no one gave Ali a chance first time around.
Secondly, the mob knew boxing was changing and probably got a piece of the TV money.

    MR. UN,,,,,,,,,,,

    That NRA Highlight,,,,,,,,,,was 'bullet ridden'

I thnk MR. REZ is so hung-up on the "Hero Worship Merry Go-Round'
that he actually believes everything revolves around the NOI and ALI.

I guess he never visited a 'construction site',,,or a 'cement plant'.
C'mon in boys,,,,,,and take right over.

"The Honorable Elijah Muhammad Cement Plant'

    It's actually quite hilarious. :rofl

reznick took it seriously because he's convinced that the NOI are badder than the American mob/Cosa Nostra/Syndicate/Mafia !

    Precisely.
It's kind of sweet, though.

MR. UN,,,,,,,,I thought you would enjoy that.

I don't think anyone really believed the N.O.I. had anything to do with either of
    the Liston fights.

The FBI was all over the place in both fights, and Sonny Liston had private security in both fights, as well as U.S. Marshalls by his side.

The deals in these fights were cut long before the fights took place.

If it was no big deal than why is Joe still upset?

In what way was Joe an uncle tom?

I would say that that insult cut deep and Ali knew it and took advantage, the thing I dislike about Ali is that people make him out to be some thing he was not.
