Round 1

Gabriel keeps her thick powerful legs moving, hopping in quick circles around the podgy Perez and tagging her with jabs and right hands delivered upward from her rear hip or slapped downward when in the middle of a combo. Perez follows and waves her fists ahead of her, vaguely aiming for Gabriel's face but with very little technique.

Round 2

Gabriel slaps the charging Perez with both palms, then backs up and starts working her stiff jab. Perez chases her into a corner and just wings several clubbing punches at her but gets slipped by as Gabriel counters with her jab. Perez keeps taking long strides toward Gabriel and forcing her to cover up and push off with her forearms. Perez keeps throwing more or less the same combo - a wide sloppy 1-2. Gabriel is effectively shut down offensively as she backs up and shields herself, however.

Round 3

Perez is fighting southpaw, pumping a right jab and taking short leaps toward Gabriel, who catches her in midair with some patient releases. Perez now sends long left leads flying high from her low crouch, with her already low center of gravity putting some extra force into them but also causing her to fall a bit short as Gabriel eludes with footwork. Perez catches Gabriel backing up with a left. They exchange and turn each other's faces with short slapping shots.

Round 4

Gabriel again begins the round with several slaps to either side of the face before getting back on the move. Perez thrusts out a right jab as she follow and quickly jerks back out of the way of counters. Perez's hair (mostly tied back in a ponytail) has begun to get unraveled up front and obstruct her vision. Gabriel keeps using the full ring to skip around and flick out jabs and straight rights but Perez inevitably catches her in a corner and forces her to cover up under heavy fire from clapping shots.

Perez really put her advantage in brawn to use that round.

39-37 Gabriel

 

Round 5

Perez walks into a 1-2 but is not deterred. Gabriel hops to the right, then left. Perez puts a right jab up high on Gabriel's chin and then bursts through as Gabriel counters with her typical 1-2, just smothering Gabriel and pushing her to the ropes where Perez attacks her bare midriff. Perez keeps mauling Gabriel up against the ropes, often punching behind her head and catching her with more of the inside of her arms than her fists, but still forcing Gabriel back and roughing her up. Six unanswered punches are pumped out by Perez.

Gabriel looks frustrated walking to her corner.

48-47 Hanna Gabriel

 

Round 6

Gabriel is harassed to the ropes, where both flurry at each other as Gabriel leans back into them while snapping her arms out straight. Perez pursues as Gabriel squirms out and starts trying to regain a rhythm of circling and jabbing. Nice lead uppercut from Gabriel as Perez advances. Perez is starting to slow her approach a little, tilting her head to slip some Gabriel jabs. As a result, Gabriel has room to breathe and keep her feet busy.

Round 7

Perez is leading with high lunging lefts, with Gabriel retreating and flashing her hands out in halfhearted counter attempts. Gabriel finally gets some space and bounces on her toes in anticipation of Perez, then plants a jab on her kisser. Gabriel looks a bit more comfortable now as she moves and jabs, until Perez again gets her into the ropes. Gabriel tries one of those uppercuts through Perez's wild swiping and again finds success with it.

 

Round 8

Perez sticks to form, bullying Gabriel into the ropes and flailing at her breathlessly. Gabriel is trying to tie her up more than brawl now, and is able to quickly get back to her outside movement. Gabriel using the jab and 1-2 very effectively now from range. Perez eats a hard right hand. Perez slaps with wild right hooks from several feet away, looking a bit desperate now and breathing heavily. The missed hook is followed by a lazy lead left which sees her countered hard with a straight right.

 

Round 9

Gabriel is moving very quickly around the ring now. Perez tries to find her with a jab but Gabriel parries it and keeps burning rubber. Hard 1-2 from Gabriel. Perez is running after her and bombing away. Gabriel shows some slickness, bending at the waist and slipping several punches against the ropes. Gabriel is moving in and out of range while turning Perez and peppering her with quick shots. Perez tries to slap her arms around wide, trying to either catch Gabriel with something heavy or pull her into a clinch (or both). A couple of those long wide punches do clip Gabriel's chin...about three or four in a row that turn her face from one side to the other before she can get her hands up or get out of the way.

 

Round 10

WAR! Perez gets right in her face and starts clubbing away. Gabriel responds with short volleys of handspeed with her elbows fully bent, speedbag style. Perez lands a hard right hand on Gabriel during an exchange and ramps up her intensity, but Gabriel is just quicker to land and more accurate - and is not bothered by the heavy blows Perez lands. Gabriel continues to let her hands go and lands a clean and perfect 1-2 that stuns Perez, then drives her into a corner where she absolutely pummels her until it's stopped.

Perez really had no choice but to sell out like she did, despite being exhausted. Entering the last round I had it 88-83 for Gabriel and can't imagine the judges had it any closer. Spirited effort. :respect
