Old Boxing Magazines

Every The Ring magazine from 1932-1936, left to me by my Grandad. I also had 1954-58, but sold them during some rough times. Shame really, kinda regret it now but needs must...

 

I started collecting in 1984. The first I bought was KO Magazine with Hector Camacho on the cover in leather pants. Unfortuanetly, he probably spent more time at the disco then training over the next few years. Anyway, I ordered back issues of KO, World Boxing, etc, at the time so that I could catch up with the last few years so I would know what was going on in boxing at the time (1984). The oldest I ordered was from 1977, which was dominated media wise by the fading Ali. Some I lost, or fell apart. I have maybe 150 in a box in my closet, which my wife alway bitches about. But, I will never throw them away. Unfortuanely, I didn't cover any of them in plastic, and read them extensively, so most are not in mint shape. Alot are in good shape, but not in normal collector mint condiditon.

 

thats what i think too.my collection of ring mags from 77-91, boxing news' from 77-81 and june 1951 boxing news 'turpin signs to fight robinson' are basically worth the same as my programmes from my own amateur fights.....................NOWT

 

Yeah I've looked on ebay for some and you usually can get them cheap 5-10 bucks the ones that I seen up there in the prices were the 20's issues.Without a doubt ring magazine have some of the coolest artwork on their covers, well on the ones from way back, this Joe Louis one is one of my absolute favorites.Here is my ring magazine Duran issue signed by Duran himself...

It'd be cool if someone could scan all of these boxing magazines and make their contents available on the internet, a la SI Vault.

 

ali has been on the cover of boxing mags more then any other fighter.in the 60's and 70's it was hard to find 1 without him on it,he dominated those covers.if your interested mike tyson is the second most covered

 

I have most of the Ring Magazines, including the very 1st one in 1922.

 

I started an earlier thread about petitioning Ring Mag to put the whole run 1922-2011 online. It would aid research tremendously.

 

Cool H, I've wanted to get some of those really early ones,cool you actually have the first issue man.I agree with "SLAKKA" and "sweetsci" they really do need to put up these magazines and contents online.Here is the first issue that H has....

Many years ago i visited the Ring Magazine office in Rockville Center, NY. Prior to that ,I would see the Ring office from the outside,whenever I would go to the fights in old MSG
on 8th Ave,@ 49st,NYC., a few blocks south of Stillman's gym...

Thats great chris, your granda musta really been into his game. Pity you had to get rid of the others. I,or should i say my father, has quite a few Rings from the early 30s although maybe not as many as yourself. He also has every boxing news from about 67-82 (roughly, as im not exact on the timeline) as well as loads of boxing illustrated from the 70s, which is a goldmine for stuff on the heavies in particular

 

i have the first ring magazine from 1922. its not the original issue, it was re-issued and came free with a copy of the ring magazine i bought in about 1993. you can tell its not the original one, due to the pages being white and its in really good condition.
ive got stacks of old ring magazines (the first i bought in 1986) some old KO magazines (from 1986 again) boxing illustrated and boxing monthly (a british mag going since 1989).
i dont really read them anymore, but just like to keep them.

I've got most of the boxing news' from 1964 onwards to the present day, few missing in the mid 70's. Loads of Ring and Boxing Illustrated from the 60's, 70's and 80's and a few from the 90's. Stopped getting them mid 90's. The Ring had a really good period late 70's-early to mid 80's with some great articles but I thought it went downhill after that.
