There's no doubt that Tommy was never as great as Tyson,Ali,ect. But how good was he? Do you think that he would have made it as far as he did without steroids?
He was a very skilled fighter. He had fast hands, great power, and he threw beautiful combinations. His chin was a little shaky at times, and he didn't have the best stamina. But overall he was a very good fighter. Not sure how much the steroids benefitted his overall achievements.
Very skilled, I loved his performance against Foreman....slightly underrated in my opinion..... But, yes, he had a shaky chin and he didn´t the best stamina......
The steroid part is tricky; in my opinion, that era was an all-out arms race in the heavyweight division and it would honestly surprise me if anything less than half of the top level operators at the time weren't taking some kind of PED (if not outright steroids) at one point. It seems like it got to the point where it became a cost of doing business as opposed to generating an advantage because everyone else was clean. As for the rest, he was his own worst enemy and a great example of a Jekyll and Hyde fighter. If he had more discipline between fights and could've improved his consistency, he would've done measurably more than he did. As it stands he was still one of my favorites to watch and was a dangerous operator when he was motivated and ready. Part of the excitement came from not knowing which Morrison you were going to get; I mean, how much can you really predict pre-fight when you're dealing with a guy who outlasts and outboxes Foreman over the distance, goes through a brutal, brutal war with Joe Hipp, and then gets blown out by Michael Bentt and nearly killed against Mercer (who almost never knocked out his better opposition)?
Your being nice. I mean he could punch and he did have fast hands but he was easy to hit at times, and his chin was more than a litle shaky...Very dangerous but also very beateable.
i think tommys lack of discipline between fights played a huge part in which fighter turned up..but tommy was a fighter..lesser guys would have just surrenderred rather than have some of the wars he had....hipp, ruddock come to mind.....he turned up to win whenever he fought and never shied away from the big bangers even with the full knowledge that his chin lacked the fortitude required to take the punches of these guys.....lots of heart, lots of bottle, fast hands, great combinbations and good power, tremendous left hook...and ALWAYS entertaining..would undoubtledly hold a belt today
as said very dangerous and a shaky chin with not a great defence ,but saying that he would be the top contender by a fair way if he was around today
Tommy certainly shares the quick hands, fast left and power of Sanders at least. In some ways they're quite similar fighters really, although I don't wish to suggest Super Southpaw Corrie Sanders is anything other than God-like, of course. Morrison would never be a champion, not a long-term one anyway...his chin, lack of defensive nous to protect it (head movement particularly) and stamina issues not to mention his out-of-the-ring problems. But he is the kind of fighter you always need in a division. Feast or famine type, exciting for an audience in victory or defeat, an Ernie Shavers type. His win over Foreman is tremendously underrated as just 'running'. Could do with a Tommy Morrison or three in the division at the moment.
he was good no doubt about it i think he needed to work on his defensive skills a little more and in doing so i think with his offensive arsenal he would of been a foe who would of gone a lot further than he had:yep:think
I think he did great vs Foreman and he deserves props for it. He showed that he had the sense and the ability to fight a smart fight and is one up on Michael Moorer for that reason. It was Morrison's best performance..better than alll those crunching, spectacular knockouts that he scored.
Good guy from Oklahoma who laid a lot of pipe on the women up there, and provided a bunch of excitement to the USA and ESPN fights back then.
