    Just noticed Gary Jacobs is down twice but I only remember him in a world title fight with Pernell Whittaker.

    Good post. Shows how much easier 'world' title shots are to come by nowadays.

    Cheers again :good

    I just thought it was a good idea to try and compile every British "world" title challenger obviously the value of that has diminished in the past 2 decades but they all deserve their due imo

    just a few observations to make with particular reference to Ireland. You've obviously included all fighters born in the north of Ireland as they are eligible to fight for British titles, in this case you have one missing- Ray Close 1993.

    Michael Carruth is from the south of Ireland and should be deleted.

    It's debatable if McGuigan should be included as he wasn't British, he's from the south of Ireland and qualified for British citizenship when he married his wife. He then took out British citizenship which allowed him to fight for British titles.

    no problem mate, it's a tough one as politics will often get involved and disputes will naturally arrise on what nationality a fighter should be classified as. for instance john duddy was classified as british by boxrec for a number of years much to duddy's annoyance.

    arguably south of ireland fighters who fought for world titles prior to 1920 could also be included as they were essentially born in the UK;

    Jem Roache, Tom Sharkey, Jock nopareil Dempsey. there's probably a few others that I can't think of

    As well as fighting Reid for the tittle in 1997, i believe Henry Wharton also fought Benn (WBC) and Eubanks (WBO) both in 1994..........

    Yep, that's right. Mid 96, after Bowe had ditched it.

    It's actually a really entertaining, aggressive fight, too...

    I know it's before the IBF and WBO ...... but to have no British boxer in a world title fight in 1982 has surprised me :shock:
