    Fellas,

    I've been trippn' down Memory Lane as of late and going through old tapes of mine and I have recently reviewed both 1980s fights with Roger Mayweather facing Julio C. Chavez...
    :deal
    Fight # 1 of 1985 was at 135 pounds, and while Mayweather looked great in round 1, he got clipped and fell apart in round 2 against Chavez. Mayweather's glass-jaw really got shattered there...
    :shock:
    Chavez KO 2 Mayweather via Richard Steele waiving it off after Mayweather had been dropped 3 X by Chavez...
    :yep
    Fight # 2 of 1989 was at 140 pounds, but this time Roger Mayweather was defending his WBC 140 lb. title against J.C. Chavez in Los Angeles in front of a huge "Chavez" crowd...
    :deal
    From the start of the rematch, Roger Mayweather was fast on his feet like a snake in the woods, but J.C. Chavez nailed Mayweather with a left hook in either rds 2 or 3 and Mayweather began to slow down and hold his ground. BIG MISTAKE! Chavez simply began his walk-down / beat-down of Mayweather from there onward. Oh, sure, Mayweather had some good flurries and exchanges to offer later in the rematch, but Chavez looked too strong and poised.. Mayweather just never could take the heat or pain in a barn-burning fight...
    :bbb:patsch
    Chavez forces Mayweather to sit and quit in his corner after round 10.
    :scaredas::yikes

    Amazing thing was, Harold Lederman had the fight scored even after round 9. Again, Mayweather just couldn't take the heat / pain from Chavez...

    The first fight was actually at 130 lbs. for Chavez's WBC Super featherweight title. Mayweather took a better punch at 140 lbs. I thought the second fight was competitive. Mayweather landed alot of punches, and Chavez wore him down with body punches. Chavez really didn't land alot of head shots. If he had, he probably could have ended it earlier. Mayweather was broken to to the body, and mentally. He landed his best punches and couldn't hurt Chavez.

    Yes, 10-4.. Mayweather was frail at 130 and 135, but filled out at 140 and looked stronger... However, 140 became Chavez' primary home for his peak yrs in boxing.... Still, I love reviewing the rematch of '89...

    Yeah, I remember, there was a major uproar at my house. When Merchant blurted out" I have Mayweather ahead"! this was a brutal dissection of the " Mexican Assasin"! To the point where the ref. asked Mayweather if he wanted to continue, He shook his head no...

    I never bought into Mayweather as much as others did. I thought Chavez should have steamrolled the guy and the fights were far more competitive than I thought they'd be. Roger needed a lot of room to throw & once Chavez was inside of that particular real estate, the Mayweather defense was not going to hold up against those Chavez combos.
