Indeed. The UFC only has one promoter. This structure (although remininding me of the WWF at times) works much better for the heatlh of the sport. Of course there are some drawbacks - popular/great fighters (like Fedor) who happen to be outside of the UFC do not get to face any fighters within the UFC. Another problem is that it is dictatorial in nature, with a single man pulling all the levers.

Owning this particular list collectively isn't necessarily something for the UFC to be proud of. For one, it doesn't have the first or second spots, demonstating that boxing has the true superstars. For two, the fact that you have to pay $50 to see every single UFC event is a terrible thing.

In short, millions of UFC fans are being dinged for $50, excessively often, yet the top boxers make much more than the top UFC fighters.

I'm interested to see what will happen when the inevitable over-saturation of MMA - well, let's be honest, UFC - occurs. It's already kind of starting; Kevin James has an MMA comedy coming out soon, MMA strip mall McDojos are popping up, regular gyms (like Gold's or 24 Hour Fitness) are offering things like MMA classes (to train like a the UFC!). In any event, we all know boxing can weather a terrible storm (at least in the USA), because in a sense it has become like Jazz, a hardcore group of followers tends to keep it afloat in between mega events. At some time, I'm fairly certain that the UFC will hit a point a where all of those guys wearing shiny Affliction shirts will get bored and move on to something else. Whether that is caused by too many PPVs (as we've seen with boxing), or perhaps the glut of being the only successful promotion will take it's toll. In any event the real question I ask is whether or not MMA has a dedicated enough fan base to sustain the dark times that inevitably lay ahead.

Brock Lesnar got about $400k for the Velasquez bout. Now check these earnings
Juan Manuel Márquez $1,400,000 vs. Michael Katsidis $530,000
Andre Berto $1,250,000 vs. Freddy Hernandez

Clearly boxers make more money than mma fighters

MMA is capable of doing something that boxing can not do, which is create white american stars. As long as they are capable of doing that they will be okay. It gives white americans a combat sport where they can finally root for their own

Well, if it was $30 like some boxing PPV's, perhaps the 1 and 2 spots would have gone to the UFC, like the remaining 8 spots on this list.

Secondly, most fans of the UFC tend to be from the younger generation, a generation that shall we say, knows its way around the internet during PPV times.

UFC fighers may not make more money than boxers, on average, but Dana White still makes more money than any promoter in boxing.

The UFC is about to make its debut here in Toronto, this year (MMA was illegal before) and trust me this city will go nuts and it will create excitement in a way no boxing event could (partly because no world title fight would ever be dreamt of being staged in Toronto due to perceived non interest in boxing....the best we could do is Rumble at Rama with Steve Molitor which was actually held up North in friggin cottage country)

Lastly, you simply cannot deny the astounding rise of MMA during the past decade. It probably is the fastest growing sport on the planet and it may be sucking off potential fans from boxing. It has resisted decline and it has proven not to be just a fad, at least for the short term.

Again, boxing can do a lot better. It has to undertake serious reforms.

Also, for the people that say "What happens to boxing when Mayweather and Pacquiao retire?" It'll be the same result when people said "what happens when Tyson retires?" "what happens when De La Hoya retires?" for every star that leaves another one comes. Pacquiao and Mayweather nobody knew who they were, besides boxing fans, up until 2006 or so. In 5-7 years when there is no Pacquiao and Mayweather there will be so and so.

Yes I agree. There will likely be other stars in the crap shoot, who will have networks hyping them up to no end. But I'm not sure why this PPV list is being greeted with enthusiasm by people here. The top 8 spots are taken by the UFC and collectively the number of top 10 buys far exceeds those of boxing. Not bad for a relatively new sports league.

Wow, you're an idiot. What do you mean by creating? Are you suggesting Black MMA athletes are rolling over for the White ones to make the sport more popular in America?

Excuse me. Last time I checked Mike Tyson, Micheal Jordan, Tiger Woods, Labron James and Kobe Bryant were all wealthy athletes at the top of their sports (sports that are popular in the US), supported and celebrated by whites and blacks alike in the US. Footbal is arguably the most popular sport in the US, yet its mostly played by Blacks at the pro level. Whoosh, there goes your crack pot theory.

if you superstar it doesn't matter what color you are, and football fans are supporting teams not players.
it really help UFC that it is sport where the American white kids can make it.
boxing and other real sports, white Americans are dying.
