Beebs has made a good point that most of the time these guys learn the work ethic of a pro, strategy, having a good team, good sparring etc It isn't so much technical but even then I'm sure NCAA wrestler could teach you a thing or two.

How can we talk so low of someone who has beaten Couture, Mir, Herring and Carwin!

 

I think becuase he won due largely to of his genetic advantages. Apart from administering juice to his team it's difficult to see how he can pass any of this on. A former WWE guy obsessed with muscle was a TUF coach before and took a bodybuilding dietition as one of his coaches, we all know how well that went.

 

I think its a huge and unwarranted criticism to say Couture, Mir, Herring and Carwin couldn't beat a guy due to genetics. I would say it is a huge undersell of MMA.

In truth he is a physical talent who is an NCAA wrestler. In MMA, that couple with a good understanding of other martial arts will get you far.

Going into the Randy fight, Couture was coming off of 2 wins where he had controlled big guys.

I think Brock has a good work ethic and he'll push these guys like Kos, ORtiz etc However at that level, it is the strategic fighter who wins due to having such little time in which to turn things around.

 

Hell yeah he has a chance. We haven't seen JDS on the ground yet, and to assume that he's necessarily as good as Mir seems like nuthugging. Past that, you'd have to assume that he's BETTER AND STRONGER than Mir and would be able to get out of that horrible position that Mir was trapped in if Lesnar got on top of him. I'll be rooting for JDS hard and really hope he wins, but this is a lot more of a coin flip (who gets to do their thing first) than people are making it seem.

 

I don't think his boxing being better than Cain's is going to make him more dangerous than Cain. I know that may sound foolish, but I think Cain's wrestling is what made him so dominant against Lesnar. Lesnar is not a very good striker, he has lots of power in his straight right but his standup is pretty awful.

What's going to matter is if JDS can keep the fight standing. Sure, he has shown good takedown defense in the past but I don't know if it is going to be enough to stop Lesnar. In fact, I am anticipating a stoppage win for Brock via Gnp ala Brock-Mir II.

His most recent performances have seen him savaged by Carwin for a round before being smashed to bits by Velasquez. It's lowered his stock substantially, and his all conquering Viking straight off the longboat image is dead. But as you say, he's still 4-1 in his last five, with wins over Carwin, Mir, Couture and Herring.

It's no surprise so many people are picking Dos Santos though. He's looked great in the UFC so far, and Brock's greatest weakness is his greatest strength. That's bad news for the Deathclutch posse.

 

In fact, I think it's only codeman99998 who's put his balls on the chopper and called this fight for Lesnar.

 

Only thing we should be talking about is how ballsy Lesnar is. He is showing incredible courage after his second defeat, let alone still inside 10 fights. You just would not get that in boxing bar a few.

I'm intrigued to see Brock as a person.

 

Cain was a bad match up for Brock because he couldn't control him on the ground. He took him down, but Cain popped right back up. Cain is 100x the wrestler with 100x the td defense Santos will ever be. THere is nothing to suggest Santos has anything like the tdd or ground game to worry Brock in the way Cain did. There are literally dozens of heavyweights with better striking/boxing than Brock, that is not a bad style match up for him, its an easy one. You have to wrestle Brock first before you can strike with him. Cain can, Santos....

JDS is a great, great fight for Brock right now. JDS is a better athlete than say Kongo or Struve (easy style match up for Brock he should probably take) so his tdd is a lot better (probably, he still hasn't fought an ncaa wrestler so its difficult to say with condifence) - but SAntos high ranking would offer BRock the best risk: reward: style ratio out of any prominent heavyweight.

I was posting here years ago that Brock would lose to a slightly inferior wrestler with better conditioning and slightly more all round skills. He was at a real risk of losing to Couture and likely would have had Randy punch resistance not seemingly turned to ****. Carwin was another guy who wasn't the wrestler or athlete that Brock was but was good enough to competitive and make him scramble, make him really work for takedown and tie ups and shrimp constantly when the fight goes to the ground. These fight are a nightmare for Brock because hes so big his conditioning will never be able for fight at that high pace for more than a few minutes. But strikers, and even it seems to me jj guys pose almost no threat to him. Just try and triangle someone with a back like Brock:good

People are overreacting in the extreme to one round where he got back to his feet on his own and went on to win the fight and one fight he lost.

If he gets JDS clinched up against the cage or to the ground, he has the ability to stop the fight at any time.

 

Not an apt comparison; Brock does not do bodybuilding, he trains with some of the most advanced and respected sports trainers in the world specifically for his sport.

The guy has basically filled the role he will fill on TUF for his own career, which despite the massive short term memory loss going around, has been phenomenal.

 

Lesnar is a strange fighter to measure but JDS definitely has the skills to beat him.

I just hope he does and we get JDS v Cain Velasquez

From what you have highlighter it seems you don't think an NCAA wrestler (one who is good enough to become the UFC Champ)has far superior tdd than Junior Dos Santos, with no wrestling or grappling base (and who has never fought a wrestler in his career from you could even judge how good he is for a non-wrestler?
