Ali-Norton 3 revisited

I think Ali won rd 6 and 9 on account of landing the cleaner punches and staggering Ken in both rounds. 4 and 11 was very close, could go either way. I think Ali edged rd 4 and Norton rd 11.

7-5 to Ali for me. I have it close but clear.

 

A Draw would clearly have been fair for both fighters,,,,

Would have been nice to have a Round 13,,,,

 

Yet one of the judges said he didn't. :yep

 

By keeping Ali as Champion,

*) The State boxing officials got attention and nice hospitalities
*) The promoters still continued to reep in big fight percentages
*) The Boxing Associations got big sanctioning fee's
*) The advertisers got more exposure
*) The sports writers got more attention

 

That judge should have gone to Specsavers. Spinks clearly won their first fight. Mainly due to Muhammad doing what he did against Ron Lyle three years earlier,which was doing the minimum of work,and letting his opponent pick up points on workrate. Unlike the Lyle fight,though,Ali was no longer capable of those lightning fast combos which would stop a man.

 

Inexcusable!

Because the distance between Spinks and Ali was clearly greater than that between Ali and Norton at the House Ruth Built.

 

4th both landed some jabs, Norton batters Ali's body, Ali lands good, clean 1-2 but Kenny finishes strong.

6th was clarly Ken's for me. He lands good on Ali's jaw early, works the body, jabs good. Ali fights back with 1 minute left but Norton still attacks. Foe me Norton worked harder to get this round.

Don't have notes on 9th and 11th.

I've noticed that some don't put big notice on Norton's body punches, he landed tons of them and many times I gave him edge in round basing on that.

 

I had the second Ali Norton 7-5 for Ali. I seen an interview with futch where he admitted that Norton blew the second fight cause he gave away the first 4 rounds trying to be joe frazier.

 

Yes , it was a cold nite.
We thought that it would be Ali's last fight and last chance to see him.
We drove all day, slept in the parking lot.
Ali did enough to win and Norton did enough to lose.

Norton just followed him around catching jabs off his face (like the first 20 punches of the round).
Big deal --m he threw a couple of haymakers.

Loads of people there, far more highly regarded than you, thought Norton won. You were probably in the peanut gallery, looking at a sweaty back all evening.

 

Youtube comments by viewers who watch Ali-Norton III from beginning to end are revealing. Scoring off broadcast footage or film is different from watching it live, however, the apparent preponderance of posted opinions in favor of Ali must be noted.

I've expressed the attitude before that a Norton win in New York might have been far more controversial than the close verdict for Ali. The various scores make it clear that this was not a robbery, but merely a tight showdown guaranteed to trigger debate.

Ken simply played not to lose, as Shavers later did, instead of going for broke like Foreman, Frazier and Leon. Playing safe with Ali was a recipe for survival. not victory. Norton has only himself to blame. Just before Larry Middleton was robbed of extending Ken the distance in Norton's last match before Yankee Stadium, Jerry Quarry commented from his broadcast position that a tiring Kenny would have to do "a heckuva lot better against Ali." Norton was on the spot against Middleton, knew it, and failed to impress.

 

I saw the fight at Westchester County Center, White Plains, New York.
About 40-minutes north of Yankee Stadium.
4000 people in attendance.
After the fight, most of the Ali supporters walked out before the decision was announced.
They conceded the fight.
While still waiting for the decision in the Center, jaws dropped when the decision
was broadcasted on the screen.

 

Apparently you really like Ken Norton.
As a fighter he did OK.
But not championship material.
Remember Norton vs Forman or better yet, Norton vs Cooney.
No chin.
