There have been: Vitali in 2004 and Wlad in 2009. There have also been a shitload of beltholders: Peter, Sanders, Byrd, Chagaev, Maskaev, Rahman, Ruiz, Valuev, Briggs, Brewster, Haye, Lyakhovich, Ibragimov.
Not quite what I meant, yes there have been belt holders, yes there have been HW's declared no.1 and fought for the Ring title but I don't consider any of the aforementioned names as champions because they simply haven't beaten the best out there or in the case of Vitali in 04, had anyone of note to beat. It was a flippant comment and very much a point of view which I can understand if you disagree but I believe non of the 3 to have the mentality of a champion. Maybe Vitali is different but Vlad and Haye have both now pussied out of this fight, Haye more than once (although I can hardly blame him for the Vlad fight with the Setanta stuff that happened). I so want to see this fight as I used to believe in Haye but now I just wish all three would **** off and let the new generation of HW's come through.
I can go with you here to some degree, where I guess we differ is that I give the man credit for beating "the best" available guys, granted I think the vast majority are "bollocks" (I believe is what they say, it's MLK day, trying to be inclusive here, togetherness is the theme bare with me) but I don't really see what he could have done differently. Edit: **** K2, I just had a "moment of clarity": They could have easily been fighting Grizzly Bears, possibly Hippo's, maybe large dogs etc in exhibition matches...what other HW could say they did that? In short they choose not to make a name for themselves, and so my sympathy and/or appreciation is no more, **** K2.

I completely agree with you. I give them credit for beating the best available too. My problem is with guys like Silencer who believe those opponents were elite quality fighters. To read his post you would think Wlad had defeated an army of Alis & Fraziers. Most sane people know that couldn't be further from the truth.
Ruslan Chagaev won a gold medal, how many did the greats of the past like Larry Holmes, Jimmy Ellis, Jerry Quarry, and Buster Douglas win??? they would be jokes today...
