Mayweather has excellent footwork, as he's generally in the right position, knows the distance and angles. He does have a tendency to walk back in straight lines to the ropes, although at times it clearly appears to be by design to set a trap (Hatton KO) or get his opponent to expend energy as Floyd covers up. Pacquiao has amazing foot speed, and his footwork overall has improved to a point where he can use it as a huge weapon. During one sequence against Cotto, he was backing up as Cotto was stalking and Manny quickly went right and rotated his body, getting in the right position, and landing around and through Cotto's guard. There's much less sloppy movement, less crossing of the feet, etc.. Hopkins at his age obviously is going to lose something, but has mastered the nuances of the sport and knows where to place his feet. He absolutely killed Pavlik with superior positioning. Who else nowadays (or in recent years) are among the best in the sport with their footwork?
When I saw the thread title, I immediately thought of Mantequilla, Bazooka Gomez, and Pep, but since you're going for recent years, it gets more tricky. JMM has nice footwork when he takes little side steps and backward steps to counterpunch opponents, but when he comes forward, it's another story as he gets a little sloppy and off balance...MAB had nice footwork, balance, and control. But it seems like this part of the sport has become kind of a lost art. A lot of fighters are quick on their feet and talented, but fall off balance and out of position a lot...and back up in straight lines when attacked. I'm having trouble thinking of guys. Cotto used to have excellent balance (and commentators would mention it), but it looks like he's regressed a lot.
dont know that khan is the most skilled, but he certantly has fast footwork/movement. One of the thing that makes pac v floyd so good is that both have great footwork. also both have fast punches, good counters, good timing, good use of range. would be a real nice technical fight to watch, shame its very unlikely at this point. thanks floyd!.
Cotto has or had good footwork especially at 140, but I wouldn't say the best thats for sure. He really put that footwork on display in the pacman and margo fight.
Martinez has excellent footwork, although I feel its more instinctive than trained, as he also had shown a habit of (not often) putting himself in very awkward and off balance positions Majority of time though, he has an amazing aptitude for placing his opponents off target and while placing his own punches very well
Khan just has fast feet, but he does not have good footwork. It's one of the things he and Roach really need to work on so Khan can improve.
Calzaghe. Threw punches from weird angles and could really use his feet for evasion too. A rare natural talent.
Pacquiao & Mayweather & Hopkins. If you want to go with old timers I'd go with Benny Leonard & Willie Pep. Wilfredo Gomez & Salvador Sanchez had great footwork too. Young guns with good footwork are Martinez and maybe Donaire & Bute. RJJ was fast with his feet but always in a good position to punch in his prime. He had to have very good footwork in order to get off those many punches he threw from odd angles.
