Is Lee the WBA Super Bantamweight title holder. Yes. Does that mean anything to me, know? Lee as the No.2 Super Bantamweight in the world and that deserves respect. Just like Dunne was a top 5 Super Bantam and that deserves respect.

Zbik is the WBC title holder at Middleweight. What does than mean to me, absolutely nothing. Just like when Martinez was the WBC champion in meant absolutely nothing. Zbik is a top 10 Middleweight, that means something. Martinez is the World Champion at Middleweight, that means something.

The belts only serve a purpose for occasionally forcing competitive fights like Khan vs Maidana. Thats it. As long as they keep doing that every now and then and don't stop any big fights I don't have a problem cos i can pretty much ignore them.

Fair enough. In this instance though they were forcing an uncompetitive fight between Martinez and Zibk.

It's just a move by Sillyman to get more Mexicans holding titles.

Chavez jr is next to nothing, but still better than Zbik.

Zbik should never have fought for an interim title in the first place.

Pavlik made a mandatory defence against Rubio in Feb '09 yet Zbik fought for an interim title 5 months later :huh

Zbik is a top 10 Middleweight with everybody. Its not the WBC's fault its a weak division. Martinez vs everyone at middleweight right now has Maravilla as a heavy betting favourite unless he goes to Germany.

Until fighters turn round and say that they aren't paying fees for bull**** titles the situation would never change.

The alphabets are lapping it up, as are regionals like the EBU with the main title, the EU and EE..... and even our own board of control are coming up with more and more titles to encompass more fights to bring in revenue.

It's not in the WBC's interests to have just one champion at a weight - they'll make an interim title fight soon enough to go along with Zbik. Martinez is having bother getting an opponent so there's a gap between money coming in.

i dont understand surely they would be getting more money from a Martinez defence than a Zbik fight though in terms of % for sanctioning fee.

I must concede however that it is most likely the agenda of getiing Chaves jr a title shot and that is sadly worth more money if he wins than Martinez

you have to wonder why the **** Martinez decided to go to 160 instead of 154lbs. Theres at least 5 good fights he could make at that weight and the Williams rematch could have been there to.

 Why are you standing up for the WBC? They didn't have to strip Martinez. They didn't have to give Zbik an interim belt for beating ****in Spada. The could have tried to get Martinez to fight one of the guys who've picked up the other titles, like Pirog or Golovkin, instead of stripping Martinez and giving it to their crappy interim belt holder.

    Boom :thumbsup

This is a calculated gamble by the WBC.

Martinez is popular with the hardcore fans, but isn't a draw financially and will have to up in weight and sign with Showtime to get some of the action at 168.

At 160 half the fighters have been running around trying to get out of the fight.... wouldn't have surprised me to see Universum pull Zbik from purse bids if Martinez took the option of that fight and leaving HBO out of the loop.

Essentially they are making an investment in Chavez. He's improved under Roach a fair bit and there's plenty of pretenders that don't want to fight each other in and around 160.

Arum will have him on PPV generating some big bucks - three easy defences and they'd have an immediate return.

They are businesses, just like Sports Network or Top Rank..... not Governing Bodies - that's the differentiation of the past few years compared to, say, the 80's when they generally had the right men holding the titles, albeit with the odd exception and the odd shitty mandatory.

September 13th 2008 - Vernon Forest beats Sergio Mora to regain the WBC Light Middleweight title.

    3 weeks later

October 4th 2008 - Sergio Martinez beats Alex Bunema for the vacant WBC interim Light Middleweight title.

April 2009 - Veron Forrest is stripped of the WBC Light Middleweight title for failing to fight Sergio Martinez. Martinez becomes the WBC Light Middleweight champion.

It's easy to say that when you know that the other guy isn't interested or that it's not financially viable.

Universum fighters never fight anyone good, they just peddle an interim title and wait for the org to step in - as in this case.

The WBC won't be happy with Martinez historically because they didn't get a slice of the action for the first Williams fight. Taking a non-title contest in another division doesn't go down too well these days, especially after a 10 month layoff which he had.
