I'm not watching Burns-Laryea

Its an awful fight, well an awful defence, but 1 positive you could take from it is, at least he's keeping active, he went thru a long spell of inactivity before so im happy about this.

Billy says there's a big fight coming this yr so im gonna give Burns the benifit of the doubt.

Not sure why you wouldn't tune in being as its not on PPV???

 

really poor fight i was reading that burns wants to unify with mzonke fana but he must be talking ****.

 

This fight is as bad as the Harrison fight.

Burns has had a handy defence already which I had no problem with. I'm not saying he next fight should be unification but this opponent is unforgivable. It's pathetic and a lot of respect I've had for him goes with this.

 

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Ricky Burns isn't even proved at domestic level let alone a 'world champion'. Yes he holds one of the 115 belts out there and it was a terrific night when he just about beat a jetlagged and pretty unproven Roman Martinez in his hometown. But he's still a little way from being one of the best in the world in his weight area.

Burns' only fight in ages where he hasn't been at least a 1/16 favourite was when he got beat by Carl Johanneson 3 or 4 years ago and that was for a British title I believe. And before then he lost to Alex Arthur.

Has Ricky Burns improved since then? Well his career would obviously say so and he's clearly got a lot of confidence now but it's mainly due to good promotion and the luck of having Frank Warren handpick fights for him.

The Superfeatherweight division isn't very strong at the moment anyway so for Burns to be fighting Laryea in a supposed 'world' title fight is nothing short of a disgrace and it's a joke that Sky are happy to go along with it.

But it makes money and keeps some Scottish fans happy so we'll see a few more of these until either Burns', Sky or Frank Warren get a little too ambitious and he steps up to a level too far.

I'm not even sure Burns would beat the likes of Foster Jr, Walsh, Sykes and Crolla. But realistically and all hype aside, this is the level of fighters that Burns should be in with now.

 

Royal, I get your anger but if you're in your house on the 12th, I think you'll watch the boxing.

I can me doing the same, its a **** fight but I'm sure I'll end up either turning it on in the house or catching it down the pub.

I totally agree with your points royalt208. If we don't show our surely justiable displeasure then nobody else will. Be it through their ignorance, indifference or not wanting to rock the boat the sports media and boxing media more specifically will say nothing.

In recent years the alphabets have, through their own comical ratings, turned ratings into something that is almost looked upon as irrelevant. We need to somehow reverse this so that everybody, including casual fans, can see that Laryea, like Evenson is not regarded as a worthy opponent at world championship level.

 

the fight is a disgrace. warren should be ashamed. the wbo should be ashamed and ricky and all his people should be ashamed.

what is the point of being a champ but only to fight nobodies. you are as good as the fighters you beat.

fighters don't care, they will accept empty promises and just want to get paid. warren knows he isnt the strongest champ but rather than test him and really try to find his level, he'll give him okay pay days until he can cash out when forced to fight a serious mandatory or cornered into a unification.

 

This fight is pretty sad. To be taking such fights in a division which is already poor is inexcusable.

 

Anyone else feel this is a lose/lose fight for Burns. If he looks anything less than 100% perfect in there he will be (rightly) criticised a lot. Its a pathetic defence for a World Title, more like an early 90s WBO opponent.

I'll be a Laryea supporter for this fight anyway! Would serve Warren right for looking for the easy touches.

 

Its asahme that ricky burns has this as a fight .some of the points raised are fair and the orignal poster put it over in agood way ,im still undecided in what im going to do .

Ive been to his last two fights,and enjoyed them and its good to see more reguler figths getting put on up here,but this level of opponent is pretty dire tbh ,but its not Rickys fault,or Billy...they will keep there side of the bargain by turning up in good shape to get the victory ...i blame the promoter and the matchmaker ...

 

Sorry Alba but Ricky and Billy are partly to blame, they can surely suggest to Frank that they're not happy with fighting a guy who is basically a journeyman that managed to pick up a win against a totally overhyped prospect. Laryea is probably the worst fighter I've ever seen challenge for a World Title.
