for the record..i didnt grow up on youtube...i watched showtime, hbo, usa, TNFs as often as they were aired...had a script to every ,boxing magazine known to man...no internet back in 1986 in my city...collected fights when a blank video tape was around 10 bucks for 1. why is he considered such a legend when you have a 13-14 year pro with 13-15 titles fights and your biggest name or legit threat you fought in your prime or theirs was zab judah? :think did you guys honestly think corey johnson, jan pierre and leo mas were something people gave a **** about? but the argument KT lovers will make is much like Bute....13 years...never seemed to pan out because all the other elite guys were busy... he was a great amateur, an excellent pro, but he fought alot of shot ass guys or no name guys....unless i missed all those huge PPV headline attractions he did...fill me in at the end of the day, his record of ordinary is in black and white....but if you guys were excited about 2 fights vs sharmba mitchell and zero vs oscar, randall, hell even a juan coggi would have been fun...:deal
Agreed 100%! Tszyu lost to freakin Vince Philips! How good could he have been? He shoulda gotten blown away by Prescott.... THAT would have made him a great!
for times sake, starting his time line in 1993, pointless anything b4 that 1993 Livingstone Bramble ( 3 wins in last 14 fights...impressive) 1995 Jake Rodriguez 26-2-2 (weakest champ and lightest punching guy to hold a belt.. WBA CHAMP Randall he wanted no part of,chavez the WBC champ was a little more dangerous in 95 than 2000 but K chose his route...no fame..no glory 1995 Roger Mayweather 54-11-0 (11 losses? the women were even beating roger at that point) 1996 Hugo Pineda 27-0-1 padded record, half the guys never had a win...wheres the mega fights? 1996 Corey Johnson 20-1-1 ahhh remember all those great corey johnson fights in the 90s?? no? ME EITHER 1996 Jan Piet Bergman 32-0-0 undefated as floyd would say...but fought a guy 0-8 prior to his title shot vs KT 1997 Leonardo Mas 23-2-0 IBF challenger 1997 Vince Phillips IBF KOd by a guy that he thought would be a walk over 1997 Ismael Armando Chaves (who is he and have you ever seen him in another fight?) 1998 Calvin Grove (former featherweight king, 9 losses) Hurtardo, MA Gonzalez, Ruelas..all a little better than the others..but they arent big fights in the boxing world. MA Gonzalez while good, never beat any really good elite guys... hen we can mix in more title shots against laughable guys like 2000-02-12 Ahmed Santos No shame when he fought JC Chavez chavez being kod by randall, kod by dlh 2 times, a draw with MA Gonzalez.. and a loss to Buck ****ing Smith , Kostya figures this is a great time to fight him.. i mean who cares about fighting any of the guys that already kicked his ass cant fight oscar or randall or whitaker once...but he can find time to fight sharmba mitchell 2 times?? 2001 Oktay Urkal (YAWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN) 2001 Zab Judah SUPER FIGHT - finally some much deserved credit! then more let downs..1 fight in 2002 2002 Ben Tackie (whoopie) another year passes..(YAWNNN) .1 fight in 2003 2003 Jesse James Leija (hahaha) who quit on a small cut because he was ahead on the cards after 5 rds with ward. nice way for him to earn a shot at the great KT you might not believe this..but this time almost 2 years goes by (22 months).. rematch zab? oscar? vernon? floyd? anyone? nope..the public demanded it.. and we got it.. 2004 SHARMBA MITCHELL II <insert joke> 2005 Hatton... if thats what legends are made of....then what would you call arquello, leonard, duran, hearns....see, they fought the best from their era...KT didnt..cut and dry... ok, im ready for the spin of how i dont know ****... :yepdeal
so i wouldnt come accross as a hater i didnt even harp on that loss , it happens...but alot of people think he lost the urrakal fight....right b4 judah...but when you are flattened by phillips, almost kod by hurtado..look like joe average again a guy like urrakal...and never step up to guys on your level but one time? just dont look right...but these youtube clowns have KT kicking everyones ass in the 140 division...:rofl:rofl
Well first of all part of your problem lies in your last sentence. Because NOBODY ever considers Tszyu to be on the level of Leonard, Arguello, Duran, and Hearns. And he wasnt. In reality.... just about EVERY fighter's resume can be picked apart if you choose. Pryor is one of my all time favs... but take out Arguello and his list of victims isnt all that impressive. Make no mistake however.... Tszyu was a great fighter. At one point I HATED him, and he WAS overrated when he fought.... but after 6 years of being gone Ive come to realize how good he was, and I see TOO many nowadays selling him short. He richly deserves to be the HOF also, considering ****in Barry McGugian and Brian Mitchell are in there! Theres SEVERAL 140 pounders in history that would beat Tszyu. But none currently. They dont have the tools.
He is considered great because he was clearly the most dominate 140lber of that era, and at his best he'd match against any other fighter at that weightclass. The same arguement for Tszyu not being a great fighter (quality of competition, loss in prime) could be applied to tons of guys, Joe Louis jumps to mind.
I dont think you first assertion is at all unreasonable...but almost ko'd by Hurtado and he lost to Urkal screams of hate to me.
Yeah no ****, he might want to rewatch the Hurtado fight, at no time was Tszyu hurt from the knockdowns. He was just too wreckless rushing in trying to finish Hurtado off after he put Hurtado down, he dominated that fight from start to finish.
Tsyzu is far from over-rated, people forget who zab was going into that fight, he was that victory away from being a Ring's p4p top 10, he was a 4-1 favorite against a boxer who was also considered great at that momement, that being tsyzu. An zab got knocked out an has NEVER been the same.
Zab and Tszyu were BOTH already ranked in the top 10 P4P prior to that fight. And yes, Zab was the clear favorite going in.
Tszyu was out of his prime when he fought Hatton, otherwise, in my fantasy match up, he would have KTFO Hatton in the 7th. Every 140 pounder that isn't active today, would beat all the 140 pounders that are active today. FACT There is only one Tszyu.... Only one Tszyu....
As people have already stated, you can do that to anyone's resume but if watch the guy fight & have any sense you'll see he was very good.
Juan La Porte in 4th fight 4 months into pro career. As an 8th month pro Kostya demolishes Sammy Fuentes who becomes world champ the same year Kostya does. Randall was embarrassed by Rahilou in his hometown. Randall was Chavez's Vince Phillips and in reality won both fights. Kostya would have to corner Coggi in a blind alley to get a fight.
