    Toney.

But Louis is by far the greater when it comes to ATG rankings.

Louis would have gotten criticized for destroying thadzi, Tiberi, and Griffin. Toney lost to them in his prime...

It depends what you mean by skills to some extant.

We are not exactly comparing like for like.

An aggressive heavyweight from the 1940s or a defensive middleweight from the 1990s?

    The question is problematic.

Louis. Put very simply he's better at the things he does best than Toney is at the things he does best. Obviously it's a good deal more complex than that, but who wants to get into all that, really...

    It needs breaking down

    Defense - Toney

    Counter punching - Toney

Combinations - goto go with Louis, Toney isn't a slouch when he can be bothered

Footwork - neither are great, both are efficient, Louis plods and they use it different - Louis generally to stalk, Toney to find optimal range. But I do think Toney finds his range a little better

    Timing - Toney

Jab - I think Toney's is snappier and more accurate

Right hand - both throw it nice and straight, Toney hides his better, can lead or counter with it, times it better and has more variety with it

Left Hook - both throw it really well to the head or body, Louis has more power P4P but when it comes to technique that doesn't apply so much, I'd go for tie

Uppercut - both throw it well

Ad******g in the ring and out thinking an opponent - Toney

So overall it has to be Toney, he is a great but with discipline could have been so much greater. Louis has the great discipline, solid skills, but more of a physical specimen than boxing wizard

    I have to disagree here.

I think when talking about the jab, timing, left hook, right hand, uppercut, counter punching, out thinking opponents and combination punching Joe could be brought up as one of the best of all time.

Joe Louis is a better counter-puncher than Toney. He counter's space way, way better.

No he isn't close to being near as counter puncher, if he was such a great counter puncher Conn and Walcott would never have made him look so foolish

That is a bit like saying "if Toney was such a great counterpuncher then why did Jones make him look foolish".

Couner-punchers and slicksters with superior speed are exactly the type of fighter that will make a counter-puncher look bad. Mainly because they take away that counter-punching ability.

See Jones-Toney for a really good example.
