The jab: Ike Quartey and Joe Calzaghe

I'm making this thread to see where most people stand on this issue, which has been the subject of a debate between myself and another poster.

Although I am not a fan of Joe Calzaghe's abilities, I am well aware of his strengths, you don't unify a division and become the top supermiddleweight of your era without having strengths. For Joe, I would say these were his exceptional handspeed, outstanding stamina, a good chin, good adaptability and variety at his peak, and a strong will to win.

However, having a great jab is not something I'd ever think to attribute to him. A decent jab yes, possibly even a good jab, but the other poster I was discussing this with, "BlackBrenny", says that Calzaghe has:

"one of the greatest southpaw jabs of all-time".

I'm puzzled by this, because I don't even think hardcore Calzaghe fans think of Joe as having an ATG jab, I've never heard anyone else say this (not in the media nor on here) - is this a common belief?

This guy also said that Joe Calzaghe had a superior jab to Ike Quartey, which I find very strange.

    :huh:huh:huh

Quartey has one of the best jabs I've ever seen in my life. His performance against Jung Oh Park in '95 was particularly magnificent in this regard:

What do you guys think to these two questions:

    - Does Calzaghe have an ATG jab, or are his strengths in other areas?

    - Who has the better jab between Quartey and Calzaghe?

    :bbb

My own opinion on the matter is that "BlackBrenny" should study this video:

Quartey is known for his jab, Calzaghe's known for his slaps

Calzaghe had a good weak flicker jab I guess but Quartey is probably the best I've ever seen next to Holmes much better then Calzaghe's

Quartey had one of the best jabs in recent boxing history. Calzaghe hardly ever utilized his jab and instead counter-punched and flurried. This is like comparing Joe Frazier's left hook to Zuri Lawrence's.

Calzaghe had an excellent double jab. You don't win fights only being able to use one hand like he did, if you don't have a great jab. Calzaghe was more of an inside fighter though.

    This. Exactly this. :deal

I don't see it as a fair comparison, as Quartey basically won fights using his jab, and Calzaghe didn't even try to.

But that twat did say Calzaghe's was superior, so I had to throw it out there and see what the people thought. :nut

It wasn't a patch on Quartey's though, no matter which way you look at it. Quartey's jab was phenomenal.

I think you are being very unfair, how about another poll on handspeed and see the results.

Ike gets my vote in the jab department. He could beat up a guy with nothing but.
