What was Arguello´s greatest performance ? vs Chacon ? Navarette ? Edwards, Watt ? .....I really dont know..... I would like to hear some opinions......Thanks !! :good
First fight with Afredo Escalera was a "blood-letter" for both parties.....plus it was scheduled for a 15 rd fight.
A war,,,just when you think Alexis has him, Alfredo would come back. One of the best battlers when hurt,,,,,,,,,Mr. Escalara.
I personally liked his one-sided schooling of Watt in hostile territory myself, especially since it was 2 divisions up.
Arguello said Escalera II was his toughest win. The Snake Man was a hell of an opponent, and Alexis strongly believed Alfredo belongs in Canastota.
I wish there had been a box-off, Sean O'Grady vs Howard Davis ,,,,,and Alexis Arguello vs. Ernesto Espana
There were surely better technical efforts, but I love his fight against Mancini. His movement was a bit more wooden at 135 with the increasing wear and age, and he didn't seem as fluid all around as he'd been before, but I marvelled at his sense of self-awareness in that bout. He was aware of the fact that he was going to have to work on this kid, and wear him down with a strategic, varied attack. His corner wanted an early knockout, to show everyone watching on national TV that their man was still a force to be reckoned with. He returned to his corner after the first round and said, "forget about it guys, this is no first-round knockout. This one's strong." Then he set about fulfilling their wish of brilliance, though it took 14 rounds to put the period on the end of the sentence. He jabbed, prodded, attacked the body with well-placed shots, and patiently picked the young turk apart, piece by piece. Mancini, to his undying credit, actually led that fight through the tenth, but he'd been paying a heavy toll all along. He'd say later, "I felt like I was being dissected from the first round on." Indeed he was. Arguello turned it up a notch in the championship rounds, and began putting punches together once he sensed Mancini was getting a bit tired and the snap on his punches wasn't what it had been. He had actually been in control the whole way, aware the kid had won a number of rounds, but knew the fight was for 15 rounds, and calculated what he had to do, and when. It worked to perfection, as the challenger fell before an artful combination in the 14th round, after being floored at the end of the 12th and battered relentlessly for the entirety of the 13th. It was a beautiful performance from a fighter who knew his limitations and his strengths, and what tools he needed to employ on the given occasion.
I just watched an old Arguello interview, where he talked about how his corner wanted him to make an example of mancini due to some bad press they were getting??? So he went out and tried to take Mancini out and says wow...This guy is strong, and tough and here to fight....so I went back to the corner after the round and said this ain't gonna be no quick night! Arguello always seemed to be the model of class in victory always giving his opponents a measure of self respect to walk away with!
Alfredo Escalara took it to Alexis,,,,,,,,in both fights, Escalara would have beaten any other Junior Lightweight. Time to clean the avatar face,,,,,,,,,,,,:yep
Ny favorite Arguello fight has always been the one against Kobayashi, not sure if that qualifies as his finest performance, but it is the one that made me a fan of Arguello! 1. Kobayashi 2. Escalera I 3. Escalera II 4. Watt 5. Limon 6. Edwards 7. Olivares 8. R. Castilio 9. Navaratte 10. Tam I love his fights against Mancini, Ramirez,Chacon & Pryor and although he was able to win most of those fights and they are exciting to watch i don't think he gave his personal best performances in these fights. All 3 of these guys were able to present him with pressure and problems and remains why I am in the minority of believing that he struggled with pressure fighters more than movers like most do.
Never saw the Royal Kobayashi fight. Only one on that list I missed. Rey Tam was actually a pretty good fighter.
Phillyphan I agree on the Kobayashi performance. Arguello shows his full arsenal in that fight, beginning with his jab and just slowly cranking up the pressure until he breaks Kobayashi, courtesy of a right uppercut to the body that lifts Kobayashi off the floor. My favourite Arguello fight to watch is Pryor I, closely followed by Marcel. I also love the Escalara bouts, as well as Mancini. Also for a great offensive display check out the Jose Fernandez bout.
