The truth about Hepatitis B -- Haye not fighting Chagaev is a disgrace

Chronic hepatitis B can be infectious or it can be non-infectious, depending whether the virus is only localized to the liver or if it circulates in the blood. Let's assume for a second Chagaev had the worst variety, infectious chronic hepatitis B infection, and the virus has been detected in his blood which would make him infectious. With medications (called infterferon gamma) 30-40% of people can be cured of hepatitis B: that is the virus is eliminated from the blood and from the liver, and the body will form antibodies against hepatitis B preventing future infection. Chagaev's doctors claim he was healed from chronic hepatitis B: meaning he's non-infetious and has 0 copies of the virus in his blood.
Therefore Haye claiming he won't fight Chagaev because of hepatitis B is like claiming I won't fight someone who had influenza in the past because I am afraid they're going to infect me now.
Furthermore, vaccines exist against hepatitis B viral infection. I imagine pretty much all athletic sanctioning comitees require boxers to be vaccinated against hepatitis B as soon as they get their license (because exposure to any sort of blood is a risk factor for hep. B). This would mean that Haye was vaccinated a long time ago, and even if Chagaev is infectious now, Haye is immune.

 

It won't be Haye's choice. It's up to the British Boxing Board of Control to decide whether Chagaev will get licensed or not.

 

Has the British Boxing Board of Control stated that Chagaev is forbidden to fight in UK? I´ve read that Booth thinks that this is the case, but is it official?

 

Nope, no decision has being made yet. They have however asked Chagaev's promoters to provide medical reports.

 

It's nothing to do with Haye. If the guy can't fight in Britain, then it's out of Haye's hands.

Aside from that, if he isn't fit to fight, I can understand boxers not wanting to share the ring with him.

I can't stand Haye, but I'm all for him not facing Chagaev, whether it's under orders from the board or bitching out.

It's not as simple as ''just fight in Germany then'', the British board will fine him and possibly ban him if he fights Chagaev elsewhere having been refused permission to do so here.

 

He is fit to fight though, this was well documented when the Valuev fight had to be cancelled

Wasn't the whole point of Haye skipping out on the July date for Wlad supposed to be that he HAD to face Chagaev as a mandatory before then.

I tried to explain a while ago to deluded Haye fans that that was a bull**** excuse since it would be easy for Haye to get out of a mando against a guy that has Hep B.

Lo and behold, it is so.

Wlad holds a PhD, he's not a doctor in the medical sense, to my knowledge anyway.

Chagaev clearly isn't fit to fight...... bearing in mind his performance against Wlad, struggling like hell with Travis Walker and such..... shows all the signs of being severely faded.

A fight with Haye is the last thing he needs - he'd be badly banged up and stopped, probably by the ringside doctor in the mid rounds.

I can't believe anyone actually wants to see this fight, it's almost as bad as Haye vs Holyfield.

 

I wonder why Klitschko fought him. He has much more to lose then Haye.

 

If Haye doesn't fight Chagaev he'll be stripped. If it goes to a purse bid and Universum wins, Haye will have to go to Germany Hep B or not, and that's where Wlad and Chagaev unified for the lineal championship after David bitched out, so this fight can be safely made, everything else in an excuse.

Haye's backup plan is Jean-Marc Mormeck and that pretty much speaks for itself. Why not go back to cruiserweight?

Plus should he be stripped? rules state fight mandatory or be stripped, not only able to fight in UK, WBA can make it happen some where else

 

If there's a way to avoid Chagaev I'm all for it you want to know why? Because Chagaev is shotter than shot. That being said I would vote for avoiding Chagaev if and only if Haye instead gets a better opponent lined up as a replacement -- there are a number of potential contenders, we don't know if they're medically fit to fight through for a bout in May/June. Boytsov, Adamek or Povetkin would certainly qualify. A 38 year old bum version of Mormeck does not.

 

I think if the fight can't get sanctioned then haye can't get blamed.

Doesn't give him a free pass from fighting mormeck however. It is almost as bad as a defence vs chisora and absolute leagues behind a defence vs solis.
