Tyson was most definately an in-fighter

 

Tysons infighting ability really started to improve. Here against a quick Tubbs he did his most effective work on the inside. The final shot wasnt in close, but most of the damage was done inside. Watch round 2

Even when Tyson did work on the inside he never looked truly comfortable to me. In so many fights you see him grabbing on on the inside or agreeing to clinch. I never understood why a short bull of a fighter with short arms seemed so lost on the inside. I'm not saying that Tyson was a bad in-fighter. I think against Ruddock he showed a fiery (And I think he disliked the guy) that allowed to have this punch and just "**** it" attitude that had him let his hands go more on the inside.

Even against Tubbs though, Tyson's stance starts getting more squared up and pushed back. But he had the dynamite in his fists... I'd have liked to see more in-fighting from Tyson. I see it as one of his few weaknesses (He just could've been better at it). I think among the 3 other renown swarmers in the HW division he was the worst on the inside.

 

He wasn't inside when he was throwing uppercuts and hooks? Does your definition of 'inside' mean actually being inside them? Because I'm pretty sure that kind of behaviour is frowned upon.

Inside fighting is quite ugly and unspectacular : Tyson didn't waste his time with it.
He had a decent elbow to the face in a clinch though.

 

Right and I would consider that infighting. If hes closing range and delivering more than one shot thrown from the outside, thats infighting. I dont think infighting is restricted only to fighting in the clinch, but even still Tyson generated a lot of knockouts that way.

 

He does have some success with Tubbs in what i'd class as proper in-fighting. But he really is getting out-fought on the inside and waits for Tubbs to leave himself open. Tubbs had no power, he should have stayed well away. But he also had that excess baggage to carry around.

 

This is actually what Holyfield exploited against him. I guess it depends on one's definition of infighting. He could rip off combinations in close when he had the openings but he wasn't a grind it out phone booth worker like a Frazier or Maricano. He had a habit of smothering himself or allowing himself to be smothered.

Tyson did like to load up with all his power, plus he threw wide shots, but he was very good at creating that distance like McGrain said, and a lot of it was at close range where it was delivered in combinations and in angles, something that didnt really exist against Holyfield.
