Did Davey Moore, before he fought Roberto Duran, have the wide-open, fast-punching and hard-hitting style to give Ray Leonard a battle. In a match-up of contrasting styles, I always thought that this fight would have been a disaster for Ray Leonard. His fast, quick and straight right (much better than Kevin Howard's) would have given him all sorts of problems.
Moore did have a marvelous straight right and top-notch offensive skills\talent for his pro experience. He's still a polarising fighter because of the Duran connection, but i prefer to judge him on his own merits. that said i think he was too easy to hit flush and not yet the developed ring-general for an active Leonard fighting a smart fight.Might be a bit tougher than many would think though, certainly Moore would not be the kind of fighter to have taken on in a comeback and expect an easy time. Incidentally, i think Duran would have won a close decision over him had he not had the advantage of thumbing his eye shut early. It wouldn't have been the beating it was, thoguh still likely a gruelling fight.
Davey may have given Ray some issues, but overall, Ray was too much for Davey, and his lack of defense would hurt him down the stretch, causing a late round stoppage.
This would have been a great 'wish' fight. I see Davey Moore knocking down Ray Leonard early, in a 'throw caution to the wind' style in the first 5 Rounds, and building up a solid lead.
The only reason I'd even give Moore a shot at taking Leonard is because Ray has problems at this weight with Kalue and, of course, Howard.
Well, Kevin Howard did give Leonard serious trouble, so I think Davey Moore could prove to be a nightmare. Above welterweight Leonard only really looked great once, against Hagler, an incredible performance, a strategic masterpiece (regardless of the merits of the decision), a fight he was highly motivated and trained for to miraculous proportions. He looked pretty good against Kalule, and so did Moore. It's a real fight. I'll have to pick Leonard, but it's a tough win.
Yes, if Kevin Howard can give Ray problems, I think Davey Moore will too. I think Ray will eventually win late, after one hell of a struggle. Moore is vastly underrated. He would've given Duran a much better fight too, if not for the thumb in the eye.
All pretty much agree,,,,,,,except the Butcher,,,,, Davey Moore could give Ray Leonard trouble. Davey was faster than Marvin Hagler, not better, just faster. Very dangerous fight for 8 Rounds, as Davey threw punches with power from all angles. He took out '2' dangerous punchers quick,,,,Charlie Weir and Gary Guiden, both of whom were at the top of their game. And, he hit Wilfred Benetiz with a better flush punch, than Ray Leonard or Thomas Hearns did in 30 total rounds.
Definitely not on Ray Leonard's skill level. But Moore had the equalizer, the straight right hand bomb. He'd be worth a go, as a 3-1 Underdog.
Kevin Howard gave the rusty, jherri curled, coked up Leonard problems. No comparison to a prime Leonard.
Much like he destroyed Kevin Howard,,,,,,,,,,which he did not. Davey Moore was 2-levels above Kevin Howard, on a bad day.
