If you are refering to the rumor that he used to walk around with a suitcase full of vibrators, it is nothing that hasn't been mentioned here before.
He was an average guy, he liked women, and so what? Cheap? no. He helped a lot of ex -fighters out, and did not granddstand about it. Also paid his trainer out of own pocket when he found out Al Weill was not paying him fair share. Cheap rep comes from some promoters, mostly ones in New York. Marciano felt ex-fighters deserved money if they helped promote fights. For example, Madison Square Garden would expect them to do all kinds of stuff just for a free seat. Marciano tried to ask for some compenstion. He had a crazy side, but was not bad guy. Story of him in airplane, one that did not kill him is crazy. Plane was in trouble, pilot asked everyone to prepare for troble, pu theads down, guy says Marciano calmly said 'Well, if we don't get through this, it was nice talking to you" It' s in Sheehan bio, the old one.
My dad met him a few times and said he was a great fella. Dad was an usher at Rocky's service in London.
Jesus Alf you didn't tell me that!!?? PM me everything your dad ever told you about Rock - as you might've guessed I'm a big fan - props to your dad too by the way :good
For the sake of decency,i wouldn't relate an event,i experienced concerning the Rock, outside the ring. Darn it, why hurt his family today, and who of us is without some form of sin ? In the ring, all bets are off though...
I'm with you 100% on this one Burt...this is somewhat like the belaboring of the long dead Jack Dempsey...on whether he was an evil racist...this kind of crap is disgusting.
Met The Rock as a kid at the Brockton Fair...he was there with his daughter Mary-Anne ....class guy...humble....(something we could use more of...)..met his brothers Sonny and Pete...a gentleman in and out of the ring....very good to his friends and family... SI did a story on Marciano a few years ago.....but that's old news now...all in all..a good guy.....but one tough SOB inside the ring...
While I don't believe Shommel meant it, the whole thread lends itself to mean spirited comments and attracting obvious inbred losers ..
i certaintly didnt mean to disrespect the great rocky marciano i was just curious to the other side of him. everytime ive ever seen marciano on film it seems he was a terriffic guy, humble, well spoken, but as a human being ,everyone has skeletons in their closet and all im asking is was marciano the angel he seemed to portray? and what his weaknessess as a regular human was.
I met Rocky as a kid at the Brockton Fair...nice guy...all class...just don't **** him off...he didn't trust banks...hid his money in pipes...inside of toilet tanks...etc. His family looked for his money after he died in 1969...couldn't find it though...
