Body Shot Tips

    Hey all. I've been trying to work on the power in my body shots. I've been an amateur for a while and have scored a couple of stoppages with my body shots, but am really looking to amp up my technique. I know I telegraph them quite a bit, but am looking for constructive feedback. I know I should shorten them but want pointers from avid boxing fans. If you want to tell me how much I suck, fine. But if you have valuable input into how I can improve my body shots, then please post and let me know.

    For everyone's info, if you're trying to judge my speed/power I'm 6'4" and walk around generally at 192 but can cut to 175 without too much difficulty.

    i'd say move your body into it and use the weight of your body more. Your arm goes too far back leaving you open to head shots.

    Awesome jab and straight right though. Very fast for your size.

    Thanks, JohnAnthony. I'll bear that in mind. Like I said, I know I telegraph my hooks and it's something I'm trying to work on. My jab I think is my best weapon, I practically rely on it in my bouts.

    This is exactly the kind of input I need. Thank you, again.

    I'm gonna contradict the majority here and say your jab needs a lot of work (but who's doesn't lol). You snap it out well but you circle it back. Sucker for a right hand counter.

    I do the exact same thing and can't fix it....so you might wanna get on that habit sooner rather than later lol.

    Little tip Drop the knees not the Hands. Also think theres someone behind you thats got a red hot poker, and he is about to shove it up your arse :good that should put you in balance. :D

    You have a good 1-2, try and remember to vary the jabs you throw, practice moving in then out with the jab, jab to your right aswell not just to the left, keep him honest. dont step in off of every jab, itll mask problems you will have in mobility when trying to back up off of the straights you'll find the longer bad habits like this are left to form the harder they are to get rid of.

    you've been given plenty of good advice, i have a similair bad habit with my jab not returning straight home which is a right pain to try and sort out now, stop or expose potential for any bad habits from the start and you will make it much easier for yourself, wind up the bodyshots with the shoulders, knees and feet rather than cocking your hands back, it feels strange at first but itll shorten the distance your fist travels, which means a faster shot and the gloves spend less time away from your face during the shot, bend the knees to change the level and provide a bit of extra cover and better shot.

    Apart from that id say your looking good, fast for your weight. maybe you should try and work more on some set-ups for your right hand, your body shots look good but id say your right is your best shot as of yet, if your hurting em with the body shots then you've allready half set them up for the straight or overhand right anyway, work on that, and you might find you have a new favourite punch to hurt them with.

    I can't watch the video because I'm on a college computer,
    but out of curiousity, what's your amateur record?

    Just since earlier you said you had a few stoppages of bodyshots and it got me curious

    I agree with this, also step around to the side, you need to get your feet in the right position to get around the guys elbow and get extra leverage, also your less likely to catch a counter if your not right in front of your opponent. Watch JCC,Barrera,Hatton and the way they use there footwork inside to find the angle for a body shot. Your shots look fast and hard already so if you master it youll be deadly !
     
  13. Beast genetics- would definitely like to see some fights.

    These shots are heavy on the bag as anyone can see but they arn't set up with straights to the body, there isn't a tonne of rhythm mostly chopping motion. Can throw them with an opponant moving around?

    Work on heaps of shadow boxing and do the rolling uppercut drill with some straights and mixed tempo. Master torsional movement with continuous repitition and feet placement. Punch on the inside not just to the sides, hit straights to the body aswell as huge rips make them unpredictable because dudes can take big shots that are predictable they wont if they dont know that thing is coming. Hope theres some ideas in there(tired).

    Yup.
    Don't wind it up behind you, keep it tight and lift it up and through the body.
    Body shots are mostly timing as well, Ricky Hatton has a great video on youtube about how to make a body shot really hurt.
