Which boxer who never won a world title had the most unsuccessful attempts at a title. I dont know the answer to this, just thought it would be interesting to see which boxer fell just short the most times. ill start with an example: Jose Rojas had five unsuccessful attempts V Antoni Cermeno L UD V Yober Ortega L KO4 V Chris John D TD4 V Chris John L UD 12 V Youriorkis Gamboa (interim) L TKO10 obviously theres more credit to the older generation who only had one title to fight for and no interims etc at the time. May have to do in generation wise due to modern boxers having 4 titles to box for
Other classic examples of 5 unsuccessful title attempts are: Mitsunori Seki (1 at flyweight and 4 at featherweight) Yaqui Lopez (4 at light heavyweight and 1 at cruiserweight)
Yes, and if we are talking World champs with most defeats in title fights, then Tony Canzoneri has to be up there.
I think we're talking about failed attempts at WORLD titles, and not regional belts.. In both of Quarry's bouts against Ali as well as his fight with Norton, there was no world title on the line.. His match with Ellis and first fight with Frazier were his only attempts at a world championship.
Sorry Magoo, but I was reading the title of the thread, and it said nothing about World Titles, So in that respect Quarry fought and lost 2 World title bouts . And totaled 4 title attempts and lost all 4. The two non World Titles were the NABF (North American Boxing Federation) and the two World Titles (New york State Athletic Commision World Heavyweight tiltle to Frazier) and I do beleive the won he lost to Ellis was a vacant title, either WBA or WBC, I can't remember ,one of the two though.
If you count interim title bouts Rocky Juarez has six lost/draw title bouts. If not five. Either way, a lotta chances. 2005-08-20 (interim) Humberto Soto 2006-05-20 Marco Antonio Barrera 2006-09-16 Marco Antonio Barrera 2007-11-03 Juan Manuel Marquez 2009-02-28 (draw) Chris John 2009-09-19 Chris John That's 0-5-1 in title bouts. Good fighter though.
Yaqui Lopez had shots at Conteh, Galindez 2X, and Saad Muhammad at 175, then one at De Leon at 190 near career's end. No way is five the record though. I'd imagine we're looking at the era of no decision bouts for the answer to this one.
