Cliff definately could of gone all the way. He had some exceptional boxing skills that was mostly natural talent. Not surprised Fenech had something to do with his absence from the boxing scene.

Holiday vs Fenech was also meant to be Holiday vs Samardin.

Cliff was one of the two Lightweight names on Holidays Managers list. Geuss who got wind of that and stole his spot!!!! Is it really suprising that the slimy little grease ball came back to face Holiday?

    In managers defense 33 1/3 % is going rate o/seas, 25 % here.

As long as trainer wasnt taking his cut out of Sids end too.

Fenech deserves praise for his boxing career. Nothing more.

Cliff is involved in a gym in Northern Queensland. Cairns.

    You wanna contact him??

    'AUSTRALIAN RING' Jan-Feb 1963.

"Prior is signed to James for five years. The contract still has over three years to run. The contract calls for James to recieve 25% of what Prior earns from boxing, for which 25% James has to do all managerial duties: procure the bestfights for Prior, look after his interests regarding suitability of opponents and all other tasks a manager should do."
    ************************************************************************

I appologise for the bum steer. James was not taking '30+%'. The 25% was also between 'fighter & manager'... not 'fighter & trainer'. James was in fact Priors listed trainer also. Prior had become quite disillusioned with James, as poor sparring partners were being offered; even in the lead up to his Australian title fight with, LEGEND Aboriginal, Gary Cowburn. One professional and an amatuer were offered to work with; both of whom had the flu. Chief sparring partners, Barry Butler and Peter Gudgeon, were not available. Gudgeon at rest with a broken jaw (but insisted on sparring- to no avail), and Butler- having just fought for the Australian LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE- had a dose of the flu. James claimed it 'impossible' to find others.

Not bad, considering Prior was Sydney based.

During the September 3, 1962 battle, Queenslander Cowburn also appeared favoured more-so by his own manager, who, from ringside chanted heavily "throw more punches" to the fading Cowburn. I do wonder if Prior felt his Manager, Ronnie James, was not up to task for not issueing the same knowledgable advice?

    WHEN FIGHTERS WERE FIGHTERS!!!!!!!!!

Solely judging by footage up on Youtube, Sarmardin to me looks on another level to any other Oz fighter Ive seen. This guy moves extremely well, looks very well schooled and has that co-ordination and balance only seen in the elite Mayweather/Leonard type fighters. Its rather ironic that Fenech - a fighter who made the most out of himself, dragged down a fighter who didnt amount to much, yet had all the talent and skill in the world.

The blame can't be placed solely on Fenech for the career greatness that failed to materialise. He can be blamed for the lack of interest and sudden end to a potentially GREAT career.

I've spoken with Cliff quite a lot about his career, as well as his whole reasoning for fighting. Keefy 'tried' his best with Cliff, as Keefy also mentioned. The difficulties in finding regular opponents, as well as the constant travels to 'the Isa' were wearing on both. Some other aspects remained difficult for both.

With respect to Keefy, I'll leave him out of the equasion re: dramas. Keefy had a pretty miraculous stable at that time. Brad Mayo, Mad Dog Miller, Nat Sting, Lester, Darren Miller, Jason "Ben" Hall, Samardin and a truck load of others who'd come and go- or move on to Keefy. Leo Jnr and Squillace arrived later. Leo jnr for his last 4 pro bouts 'wiff Keefy'. Karim Nashar and another dozen moved from Ams to Pro's also. Keefy was running local promotions in Melb, as well as attempting to ressurect a career for Lester at the top.... quite a juggling act. Not to mention that the early 90's were flat out with Melbourne promo's- usually dominated with Ellis or Canavan/Cooper trained men.

The Ringwood gym housed Trotter, Russell, Wolfe, Thompson, Patterson, Squillace, Gang, Young, Spackman... (and handled many others during interstate trips) so the East & West Melb fans had plenty to see.

Keefy took Cliff to two Vic State Titles, and the National junior Light Title.... funny enough that two local protege's were in the midst of being annexed by Mr.AndEmmErrrr, or promised big things by him. Both listened to the promises. That being said, Leo jnr found an immediate hate for what he listened to before, and the poison words from Fenech's mouth, following his loss to Kev Kelly. Young had lost his Commonwealth junior M/W crown in Adelaide. Cliff was ripped off, with no earnings, for his own 3 final bouts. Although Cliff did allow himself to become fodder for Jeffrey... he was not the last either.
