Every four years I make an effort and try and figure my top 100 fighters of all-time. I did it in 2003, again in 2007 (my top 100 in 2007: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21561), and now it is that time to once again, to be shot and mocked, for my opinion, LOL For the last month or so, I went though the 2007 list, and made the changes I felt were needed. My influences will have been books I have read, information I have gathered and probably strongest; peer pressure. Which bearing in mind, I have few friends who know anything about boxing anymore, means you lot. The numbers in the brackets are the position I gave the fighter in October 2007: 100 Jem Mace 99 Nicolino Loche (78) 98 Kostya Tszyu (82) 97 Ken Buchanan 96 Jeff Chandler (90) 95 Joe Frazier (84) 94 Eusebio Pedroza (59) 93 Kid McCoy (98) 92 Jung Koo Chang 91 Ted Kid Lewis (93) 90 Jack McAuliffe (80) 89 Shane Mosley 88 John L Sullivan 87 James J Corbett (89) 86 Tony Zale (94) 85 Mike Tyson (77) 84 Al Brown (60) 83 Rinty Monaghan (79) 82 Lennox Lewis (75) 81 Benny Lynch 80 Felix Trinidad (64) 79 Aaron Pryor (73) 78 Nino Benvenuti (72) 77 Carlos Ortiz (96) 76 Les Darcy 75 Freddie Welsh (92) 74 Wilfred Benitez (66) 73 Mike McCallum (69) 72 Bob Montgomery (76) 71 Wilfredo Gomez (87) 70 Jose Napoles (50) 69 Pancho Villa (29) 68 Kid Gavilan (38) 67 Carmen Basilio 66 Georges Carpentier (22) 65 Salvador Sanchez (70) 64 Jimmy Carruthers (81) 63 Antonio Cervantes (62) 62 Ruben Olivares (51) 61 Kid Chocolate (86) 60 Jack Dempsey (The Nonpareil) (58) 59 Ike Williams (47) 58 James J Jeffries (61) 57 Jack Dempsey (68) 56 Jim Driscoll (71) 55 Rocky Marciano (65) 54 George Foreman (41) 53 Jimmy McLarnin (95) 52 Tony Canzoneri (42) 51 Maxie Rosenbloom (45) 50 Azumah Nelson (52) 49 Tommy Loughran (37) 48 Alexis Arguello (35) 47 Pascual Perez (49) 46 Carlos Zarate (33) 45 Young Griffo (74) 44 Abe Attell (63) 43 Larry Holmes (55) 42 Ricardo Lopez (36) 41 Manuel Ortiz (48) 40 Eder Jofre (40) 39 Bob Foster (56) 38 Roy Jones Jr (46) 37 Michael Spinks (53) 36 Marvin Hagler (30) 35 Stanley Ketchel (54) 34 Emile Griffith (28) 33 Manny Pacquiao (100) 32 Oscar de la Hoya (21) 31 Evander Holyfield (57) 30 Tommy Hearns (31) 29 Bernard Hopkins (34) 28 Floyd Mayweather Jr (43) 27 Gene Tunney (25) 26 Jack Johnson (44) 25 George Dixon (23) 24 Terry McGovern (24) 23 Julio Cesar Chavez (19) 22 Charley Burley (11) 21 Mickey Walker (5) 20 Pernell Whitaker (20) 19 (Barbados) Joe Walcott (32) 18 Sammy Langford (18) 17 Willie Pep (6) 16 Sandy Saddler (7) 15 Barney Ross (17) 14 Joe Gans (26) 13 Carlos Monzon (15) 12 Benny Leonard (12) 11 Jimmy Wilde (8) 10 Ray Leonard (16) 9 Joe Louis (27) 8 Archie Moore (4) 7 Ezzard Charles (14) 6 Muhammad Ali (10) 5 Bob Fitzsimmons (13) 4 Harry Greb (9) 3 Roberto Duran (3) 2 Henry Armstrong (2) 1 Ray Robinson (1) Out of interest to those who may of wanted to know, the fighters dropped were: Marcel Cerdan (85) Flash Elorde (67) Jeff Fenech (97) Johnny Kilbane (39) Brian Mitchell (88) Dick Tiger (91) Harry Wills (99)
i think my brain would implode if i tried to list my top hundred. Johnny Kilbane (39) to not even making the top 100 is a big drop though
Yes, I am scratching my head over that one. 39atsch Lesson learnt, I do not think my new #39 will be facing the same problem come 2015!
Nice, when I saw your thread just now I was eager to see it, such is my respect for your knowledge on a personal level. Some gripes i have though- Mosley over Chang, Pryor over Chang, I'm glad to see Ali over Pep. It always starts world war three but i maintain with ever breath i take that you can't justify Pep over Ali, regardless of how amazing a boxer Pep was, possibly the best pure boxer to ever do it.
You've moved Ortiz from #96 to #77, and Carpentier from as high as #4 to #66. You're getting the hang of it, at least.:good
you got to admit, you have your own flavour. I'll steer clear of the obviously DISGUSTING stuff This content is protected and ask you about the guys who have dropped off. What pushed Tiger and Wills down your list? What are the criteria that allow you Kostya above those two? Very glad to see you sorted Charles-Moore, I remember that causing anxt last time around :good
Think you have to put Joe Calzaghe into the list somewhere just above Tszyu, mate. Both supreme talents who never had the opportunity to prove themselves due to the available fights to them, only Calzaghe was a little more consistent and did two weights.
I wanted to push Sammy up, I did, and then I needed to correct Gans and Louis, and damn mathematics became Langford's enemy. I read Adeyinka Makinde's Dick Tiger book in Christmas 2006, I think that got Tiger on the list then. I tried to correct my Heavyweight list pretty dramatically, and sadly Wills missed out, literally he was 101.
What the **** is this? I'm a supporter of Calzaghe where i see fit, but (and not that it really counts) 'the fights available to him', Amir Khan left Frank Warren and went to America, Calzaghe could have done that, don't give me that **** about him not getting the fights.
Calzaghe is another who just missed out, his quality was impressive in the time period (from 2007). Buchanan needed a place on that list, and with Mace and Lynch on there to, as a first-timer, I think politics stopped me putting four new Brits on there.
Prime Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones and James Toney would have moved to Britain if Calzaghe had went over to America.
