He would of stopped Maidana, if he sat down on his punches more ad hit through the target.

Khan did about as well as he was able offensively. I don't doubt that Maidana can be seriously hurt and perhaps stopped but Khan probably isn't quite the puncher to do it, even if he stops to smell the roses and sit down on each shot.

No competent corner would have advised him to go after it any more than he did.

 

Oh - and seeing McGrain in the British forum does my head in for some reason.

It just seems out of context...even though, you know, an actual UK resident's more claim to be here than me.

 

He only needs to work on his inside game so he remain vaguely competitive in close when he's struggling to keep skilled fighters at bay, fighters more skilled than Maidana. Not so he can get involved in close as a matter of habit. That's always going to be a risky and needless strategy considering his strengths.

I also think we're probably going to have to accept the fact he's not Pacquiao, he's not going to be sitting down on everything. He only sits down on a small percentage of shots. It's unlikely they're going to change that because it does not really fit into their strategy of using his legs for defence.

Offense wise, Khans best chance of stopping Maidana was to stop head hunting and go downstairs. After the success he hand in the first, I was baffled why he hardly went there the rest of the fight.

 

If he kept focussed on going down stairs too much Maidana is going to expect it and time a big shot upstairs.

Khan needs to learn to fight really "boring" jab, clinch, pivot type of fights to a have prolonged career at the top. If he doesn't then there's no doubt in my mind he'll get KO'd a couple of more times.

 

he needed to periodically dig them in when maidana had his earmuffs on and its not like Khan was not already taking big shots in that fight.

 

Look at what happened to Ortiz when he tried going in for the kill. Khan’s a fighter with lesser power and chin than Ortiz, so no doubt he would have been laid out on the canvas had he taken that route. Maidana loves a war, and that’s how he wants his opponents to engage with him. Khan did the right thing in not obliging him.
