What does the sport need, to gain popularity, and stir up more interest in the sporting world? Hardcore fans will always love boxing, but there are other sports fans that think it's dead (which we all know is not true) and have little to no interest. So what are some specific things that need to happen, for boxing to get the attention it deserves?
get rid of all the bull**** belts, have one World champ in each weight class and get the best fighting the best !
Boxing needs either Devon Alexander or Tim Bradley to beat Manny Pacquiao. Or Amir Khan to beat Floyd Mayweather. That would do enormous things for the good of the sport. Whether or not that is likely, remains to be seen.
This has nothing to do with it. Basically a monopoly. Just one maybe 2 at most federations. If we can recognize champions better they can build bigger fanbases along with more people needing to be that champion. therefore the best face the best more often.
Not sure about that...Mayweather and Pacquiao are two of a handful of guys who draw in some casual fan interest. Have them lose and no "mega" star will be at the top of boxing. Names like Bradley need to be promoted better...let them reach the casual fan. I've heard more from Bradley leading upto this bout, than I have done throughout his career.
Floyd and Manny are stars, no matter what. But how did they get there? By beating guys who were already stars. Just look at Floyd. He was known, but became a star by beating Gatti's ass, then beating De La Hoya. And Pacquiao, who was already known to boxing fans, became a superstar by beating De La Hoya and KOing Hatton. So when a guy who is a young star, beats the superstar, he elevates his position and draws more attention to the sport. There is a chance of something like that happening later this year when Adamek fights Klitschko. If he wins, it would be a great thing for boxing.
Good post. In addition, I would say it needs more accessible television exposure of its biggest and brightest. PPV simply does not do the trick. FNF is nice, but we need far more relevant fights and fighters on a show like that to make any waves. Also, there needs to be less controversy surrounding judges, their scoring and perceived homefield advantage. In short, something needs to be done to ensure better and more accurate judging. Whatever that may be. It may help restore some credibility.
The problem being, Bradley or Khan have yet to reach even close to the level Mayweather and Pacquiao were at when they beat DLH (in and out of the ring)...neither have shown consistency in selling seats, selling PPV's, drawing excitement and buzz in the build up to their bouts...they may yet show it as the 140lbs "tournament" continues, but not yet for me.
More TV exposure. Definitely. We will see it early this year when CBS airs programming for Pacquiao vs. Mosley. Unfortunately for all of us, it's Shane Mosley, and he is washed up.
We'll have to see how this bout sells. The promotion of Alexander-Bradley has been virtually none existent from what I've (or havn't) seen. Not sure what it's like in America.
