Clottey vs Cotto: Is Clottey really that good or did the cut badly affect Cotto?

Just re-watched this fight there, and was really impressed by the performance of Joshua Clottey.

The abuse the guy got on here after his showing against Pacquiao was understandable because it really did seem like he didn't really try to win the fight and only wanted to make sure he didn't get stopped.

However, I'm maybe thinking now that this verdict was a bit harsh. Pacquiao's speed advantage over Clottey was insane, Roach had given him the perfect gameplan, and Pac's skills are on another level to the likes of Clottey and Cotto.

If we remove Pacquiao vs Clottey from our thoughts and consider Joshua Clottey as a fighter - how good is he really?

Judging by the Cotto fight, I'd say he's a damn good fighter. Certainly world-class, pushing top 5 of his division.

But that raises the question - was Clottey really that good against Cotto, or did Cotto's cut eye affect him to the point that it made the fight closer than it really should have been?

I always liked Clottey and really want to believe that he's as good as he showed he was in the Cotto fight. Am looking forward for his return.

The cut definately made a difference, not only was it big it happened early in the fight too. On the other hand you cant become a champion when all you do is hide behind your shield for 12 rounds

I think it would always be close between these two, its not like Cotto was dominating before the cut although he did get the knockdown. Its ridiculous when people say Clotteys a boring fighter they probably only saw him in one fight.

I think both, clottey is better then the man that was in his shell vs pac for 12 rounds. He is slightly under cotto's level.
I scored it 114-113 if I recall correctly, the kd did it for cotto, also clotteys passive approach in the final rounds didnt help. Clottey is a good fighter but I dothink that without the cut cotto could have won a wider ud.

I watched the fight recently and still scored it for Cotto, cut or no cut.

For me Clottey has always been on the periphery, every big fight he's been he has some reason for not quite winning.

Clottey is better than he showed in the Pacquiao fight and I think either way, the fight would have been close. But, I do think the cut had a pretty big effect on Cotto. You could see, except for the sixth and the late rounds when he knew he had to do something, that Cotto fought very conservatively and was, understandably, worried about the fight being stopped if any further damage was caused. On top of that, I think Miguel was/is past his best. Not 'shot' by any stretch, but definitely had missed a step after the Plastarito fight.

He's a good fighter, and would always present great problems for Cotto, though I felt he lost a close one to Miguel. I'd back him to beat Berto, and any Welterweight for that matter save Manny or Floyd. He was just never allowed into the fight against Pacquiao. The fact that so many just see that fight as him refusing to throw punches shows you how misunderstood Pacquiao's performance was. He shut down a much bigger, quality man and showed that he's an outstanding ring general.

I agree. Pacquiao is a special fighter. The way he moved in and out, and mixed in rapidfire head-body combos meant that Clottey couldn't do anything otherwise he was eating horrible shots. I really feel that Clottey is going to brutalize his next few opponents, he will be so dying to ram the critics' words down their throats. He is a very good fighter.

Is Morales really that good or did the cut badly affect Pacquiao?

    Just messing.

Nah, Clottey is good. Hard fight for anyone. The cut sure as hell didn't help Cotto

Did anyone see that interview Clottey gave to that Ghana network? Apparently they picked him up right from the airport when he landed and brought him to the studio. It's like 30 minutes long.

The guy is like "I don't make any excuses, but I had an off day, my stomach was hurting, I had trouble making weight, I didn't have a nutritionist, etc, etc etc"

A lot of people scored it for Clottey. I had it to Cotto by a point or two, but I still think Clottey looked like the better man on the night, he gave the fight away by stopping throwing late on. Still can't understand why he did that.

Every cut badly affects Pacquiao. He goes to pieces for a couple of rounds every time he gets cut it seems.

He's is not elite but he can be a live dog for anyone at 147 in a given time. I personally think he is better then berto. I see him edging berto for a UD.

A bloody cut right above the lead eye is bad news for anyone.

In the Solis fight, Pac got cut and went into terminator mode.

    then again that was Solis
