To be exact, he was 148 during the Hatton fight. As a jr. welterweight and a welterweight, he is small.
Pacroid is fighting Mosely after Mosely got beat by Floyd and the Contender. That's two grueling fights later. Two fights before those two, he refused to fight Mosely. Mosely is now a tired beaten up old man and Pacroid knows it.
Cotto said it after the fight as well. IMO, he looked in better shape against Pac than he did against Clottey and Margarito. This content is protected PC: Was coming down to 145 tougher than you thought it would be since you hadn't weighed 145 or less since 2006? MC: I really felt good at that weight. It wasn't a problem for me. PC: Alot of people felt that your corner should have stopped the fight. Was that not an option for you? MC: No, I didn't want the fight stopped. I was feeling good.
Everyone knows Mosley is washed up. This is all about money. Who would you fight first between these 2 hypothetically? [ ] Young undefeated fighter with no fan base. Zak2 is guaranteed $12 million. [ ] Aging future Hall of Famer. Still has a big punch but probably has no gas left in tank. Wanting 1 more fight before retirement. Marketable name with a good size fan base. Zak2 is guaranteed $25 million.
If Cotto won the fight, then it would have been "Pac bit more than he can chew" If Pac wins "That 1lb was SUCH a big difference that Cotto 145 is OK while Cotto 146 is ATG." Weight does make a difference. That is the whole point of weight class. But how much? It varies. And in this case, ATG vs OK is not it.
If cotto really tought that the one pound made a difference. He would be bugging pacquaio for a rematch the way JMM is. The fact that he dominated cotto in that fashion proves pacquaio just had too much weapons. Pacquaio had the speed, angle of punches and punch resistant. The only time Cotto got a good hit was when manny let him on the ropes. If Cotto was doing good early, then fadded, then i would say it was stamina issue. But manny hurt him early which change things. But this argument is pretty much a moot point. Berto will be asking for too much money without not having a fan base. Marquez who people want to see is under GBP. Bradly/Deven winner can't draw 500 people even with the fact that its the best 140 fight out there today. Cotto will fight manny again anyways unless he loses to Mayorga. Then we might have to see Mayrga pacqauio next.
Could have done the same thing but didn't, that's where it ends. In the past two years Pac has fought and beat: Margarito Clottey Cotto Hatton Mayweather has fought and beat: Mosley Marquez
Fans just need to appreciate him while he is here, he is fighting all the best available Welters, wants to fight Floyd too, fought every other top guy in most divisions. Rare breed of fighter. He could pick FAR easier fights and still make money.
He is a small guy for a Welter, he never gets near the 147 limit and that's without draining himself at all.
Cherrypicking is a welterweight picking on a lightweight. See - Mayweather- JMM A 140 pounder fighter picking on a welterweight or junior middleweight is not cherrypicking. It is watermelonpicking. See - Pac vs. Margarito
Your comments relating to weight loss not affecting the outcome of Cotto vs Paq are respectfully uninformed. I'm not Cotto so I can't speak for him but prior to the Pac fight it was widely reported that Cotto had difficulties making 147. I was a little shocked when Cotto agreed to fight Pac at a catch weight of 145 considering his difficulties making the 147 limit. Don't read too much into Cotto purportedly saying that he was fine with making 145; it's not as though he'd benefit from saying he felt flat/weak at the weight prior to fighting Pac. Now on a personal note, I can tell you that weight management in preparation for a fight is CRITICAL to a fighter's ability to optimise his strength and feelings of well being on fight night; half a pound in weight for me was the difference between feeling invincible or completely lethargic. Don't take my word - ask any fighter (excluding heavyweights of course).
