"Irish Thunder" The story of Micky Ward. Plays the movie off a break and easily one of the best book's I've ever read.
got a fairly big library of boxing books.barney ross' book is outstanding.all that stuff about lying in a ditch with dead soldiers for a couple of days with japanese bullets wizzing overhead!!christ what a life.henry armstrong's autobiography is quite short but pretty good and flame of pure fire about dempsey is outstanding.as is the increadibly homosexually named "the golden guy who licked jack dempsey twice" about gene tunney. the last few years i have been concerntrating my energies on the bare knuckle era.bob mee's "bare fists" is a cracking introduction to the golden years from james figg through all the important fighters from the late 1700's right up to jem mace in the late 1800's. one of the jem mace books is great but the other one written by his great grandson is bollocks. the bio of tom spring is excellent as is the book i am currently reading about tom cribb "the black diamond"
Its probably already been said but 'Ringside' by Budd Schulberg is brilliant, gives a great insight into landmark fights, characters, indcidents that have made boxing the sport it is today.
I am quite interested in the barenuckle era might start on a few of those. I am also interested in promoters does anybody know any books on Tex Rickard Mike Jacobs Jack Solomons Don King Bob Arum etc etc?
'The Magnificent Rube' is the story of Tex Rickards life and it is a cracking read, stories from the gold rush and the last days of the old west, well worth trying to track down
It's been a long week so forgive me for forgetting the most important thing, like the bloody title and author... But a very good book to read if you're interested in the early champs is the book about the promotion of the Corbett vs Fitzsimmons... I know that's hardly helpful at all but when I get home after football tonight I'll dig it out and be more precise!
I will have a look for it. Rickard seems to be an interesting character and one that i would like to explore.
I've not read it but I am told 'In The Red Corner' by John Duncan is a good read? I will see what boxing books I can get on the Kindle, probably not to many but I shall have a look!
Ha ha, possibly, I've actually had it since the start of December and haven't even switched it on yet, they are getting more and more popular though. I only ever read books on holiday, as soon as they have been read they either go in the bin or up in the loft, at least this way they will be saved! Just scanned through the Sports biography section on Amazon's Kindle store, there are actually more than I thought there would be, but nowhere near the amount as on real paper, maybe I need to join the local library too and get myself some real book reading material.
