Clottey vs Cotto: Is Clottey really that good or did the cut badly affect Cotto?

What 'freebie' are you refering to?

I don't know about other Cotto fans, but I've never used the loaded-gloves theory to make excuses for the Margo fight. Cotto got tired AND fought stupid in that fight, plus Margo's style is all wrong for Cotto.

To be fair, Cotto boxed pretty good while in retreat mode in the last 4 rounds or so vs Mosley.

    Or Option 3.

Miguel Cotto is overrated, has always been overrated, is still overrated, at has struggled against B level fighters his entire career.

Both very overrated. Had Cotto not lowblowed Judah he would have been sparked inside 3 and achieved nothing in his career.

Clottey's a very good and very efficient boxer. He covers up well and waits for his opponents to get tired and stops punching before he unleashes. Too bad his style doesn't work against someone like Pac or even Margarito who are tireless punchers. I'd like to see him rematch Cotto or fight Paul Williams.

Clottey is a good tought fighter, but Void fans hate his guts because Pac beat the crap out of him. Void fans want Void to beat up another woman instead of fighting Pac. Void is a coward! Void is void.

the cut made a difference but its overrstated. The fight was competitve before the cut happened. Clottey stylistically is a problem for cotto. He's got a granite chin, decent punching power and he stays right on top of you.

A bit of both I wuld say...Clottey is that good and will always pose a threat to Miguel due to their styles. That bn said, I do think the cut affected Cotto badly in the sense that he was more defensive after it...he definitely won the fight tho!

We need a third option so I didn't vote. Clottey IS that good, but the cut that Cotto had also effected his performance big time. That was a nasty cut.

I scored the Cotto-Clottey fight 115-112 for Clottey, giving Cotto the 1st (10-8 ), 4th, 5th and 12th rounds. This was a fight that Compubox didn't accurately reflect the fight by counting punches. Clottey's punches (particularly the uppercut) were much more effective than Miguel Cotto's, and that's what gave Clottey the fight in my opinion. When I heard 116-111 for Cotto I about threw something at the tv. If that fight was anywhere but MSG on Puerto Rican weekend the scores would be much closer.

I'm a big Clottey fan, and I think he beats Miguel Cotto more times than not. However, his flaws are serious (low punch output, stamina, over-reliance on turtle-shell D) aren't things you can pick up in the gym, especially when you're pushing 35.

Clottey is a good fighter. His problem is his terrible work rate which allows his opponents to outpoint him. Even when he fought Pacman, he was landing a ton of hard, flush shots when he let his hands go. Same with Margarito. He just doesn't throw enough. But the skill is there.

Was this the fight that Cotto split with his uncle in training? Could have had an effect also...

Either way, that was one hell of a cut, and I think it should have been stopped. Poor refereeing by Mercante Jr.

From round 4 onwards Cotto was pawing at his eye tirelessly, it was clearly affecting his vision. Clottely in the early stages had been using uppercuts as his main offensive weapon (standard procedure when fighting Cotto), but by the later rounds, when he realised Cotto couldn't see from his Left eye he started sending the straight rights home. So yeah I think the cut played a big factor.

That aside, I think Clottey is a very tidy boxer and a real powerful dude, he's a nightmare for anyone to fight (except Pac).

So you didn't give Cotto round six or are you getting rounds mixed up here? :huh Because round six was one of the most, if not the most, clear cut rounds in the entire fight. Cotto spent most of that round unloading on Clottey against the ropes and even momentarily wobbled him with a short left hook.
