i watched the k1 finals the other day and saw overeem fighting and winning it....honest opinions on how good he can be in mma???..i know he has been defeated and i know people can get carried away with size/power..but for once, judging by the way his opposition seemed to crumble, this guys size translates to proper, nullifying power....

how is his chin??..wrestling etc..??..apologies if this has been done to death, just interested in opinions....the k1 tourney i was watching showed him clearly outboxed, indeed knocked down by a turkish guy from his own camp until ne connected...then it was goodnight....guy seems to have huge power both in hands and when utilising kicks....that said, i wondered if the smaller guy had been able to remain elusive, how the fight would have gone.....

not looking for blind fanbly opinions or critiques, genuinely interested in this guys potential??

He is a machine but he isn't the only machine in the heavyweight division.

He is arguably the best striker in the world today. His clinch game is devastating when the knees come into the equation and his guillotine is violent as hell.

Honiestly Overeems chin was never really that bad physically even in his LHW days, his defence and heart were questionable but he was never being put down by anythig less than big shots and never knocked out cold.

Not only has he improved his technique and devolped a bit more heart(he's maybe not Fedor/Nog ice cold but he hasnt broken since the second Sergei fight) but he also fights to his strenghts far more these days. Even back as a LHW he should have been looking to contol the pace of fights alot more instead of just going crazy on offence and leaving openings.

I don't know, he is getting an awful lot of hype as of late. sure he is a beast and awfully imposing with his size and effective striking. However, the one Achilles heel I think, question mark that remains is the chin. I'd put my money on Fedor on a h2h matchup.

If were talking Fedor then I don't think an opponants chin really enters into it unless its iron like Hunts, if he lands his best shots(and they make up a good deal of what he throws) then pretty much anyone is done.

In MMA terms Elite level stand up

Very accomplished grappler / catch wrestler (won the Abu Dhabi CC Euro Qualifiers and finished every opponent along the way)

Brutal strength in terms of short powerful explosions

Has lacked heart when he's needed it in the past , but looks on another level both physically and technically as a HW these days

All in all , a very very skilled athletic , well rounded mixed martial artist , who should be classed as a very dangerous opponent for any HW !!!

Edit ; God help Todd Duffee

Personally I rate him very highly just on the basis of the way he moves. He reminds me a bit of Lennox Lewis in his prime. In that he seems to have an "natural" (say what you will) grace and speed. It seems to make other heavyweights look like rutting elephants.

Whether he is the best heavyweight we can't be sure, but I think it's fair to say more and more people are thinking he is the best heavyweight fighter by a long chalk. I don't know if he's got people fooled or hypnotised but there's something about the way he carries himself, but he does seem quite set apart.

He's a monster. Favourite to win the tournament. Quite how he got there is another issue

But ask beebs and all you'll hear is how he lost to Werdum

UFC's last 3 heavyweight champs have all been hormone users. Couture Carwin and Lesnar.

Like Lesnar, Overeem is a monster of a man with numerous athletic gifts. Unlike Lesnar, Overeem is a world class striker with some submission skills. Right now, as an mma heavyweight, Overeem is really nothing but hype with a lot of potential. Overeem's best win is against Brett Rogers, but he'll get the opportunity to prove himself this year.

If Overeem can match his hype with his skills and athleticism, we may never see his resolve tested again. More times than not, Overeem has lost when stepping up in class as an mma fighter. That was at 205. We'll soon see if being physically bigger can change that.

Hes pumped full of drugs but who the heck cares? no ones asking for random testing. This is why I love MMA.

Stamina and chin (except for when he got beaten around the ring by Badr Hari in K-1) are still just as questionable as always. Size and power aren't, especially when you're fighting second rate opposition exclusively. He'll be beaten before too long and everyone will jump on the "I always knew he was a hype-job" wagon. I've been saying it for a while now. He goes through these phases in his career, this isn't the first time.

it seems they get better with age in MMA more than any other combat sport. Overeem has been around a while.
