I like Russell and hope he's successful. Amazing handspeed, beautiful combinations, great demeanor. But he's got some ways to go and I think he's going to find out as he moves up the ranks that handspeed alone won't make him great. It seems to me he needs to make a lot of improvement defensively because right now he just stands in front of his guy and barely moves his head at all--pretty easy target even with his high guard. He also will need to create more angles for himself when he fights other world class fighters, he seems like he's never had to because he's so fast, but he will eventually.

But he's young and hopefully he'll pick these things up as he goes.

    Round 1

Huerta jabs cautiously. Hirales jabs a bit more recklessly, stepping around Huerta's lead foot and just painting him with the jab. It pays off - Huerta's forehead is already reddened. Hirales gets bold and lands some hooks to the body. Combo upstairs by Hirales, blocked. Huerta is having trouble establishing his rhythm. Hirales backs him up with a HARD 1-2-3 combo, blocked. Huerta is just shelling up and running - but running slowly, allowing Hirales to stay in punching range and wail on him. Huerta opens up with a quick blast of three consecutive punches that momentarily halt Hirales but the undefeated fighter just keeps going like an Energizer bunny. Constant combos from Hirales as Huerta keeps backing up with his hands high. Sneaky right uppercut underneath the guard by Hirales. Huerta starts to jab and then retracts as Hirales whips him with counters.

    10-9 Hirales

    Round 2

Hirales keeps up the pace, still busier and forcing Huerta to cover up but there is a barely perceptible drop-off in speed and Huerta exploits it by timing a few really heavy and well-placed shots. Hirales has to cover up himself, before getting back to work. Huerta doesn't press his advantage when he catches Hirales with something, seemingly not liking the workrate that trading with Hirales demands. Hirales goes head to head with Huerta, ducking jabs and flashing away with shoeshines. Huerta hits him cleanly a few times as they separate and Hirales clams up in the final minute.

    19-19

    Round 3

Hirales leaps in with hooks with either hand, keeping his elbows crooked and his arms flapping. Huerta stays inside his guard and only peeks out to deliver the odd left hook to the body as he intercepts the wild kamikaze attacks of Hirales. Both men trade body shots. Huerta is hurt and staggers into a corner! The crowd erupts! Hirales chases him down but Huerta is able to get the guard up and stave him off with some shoving and return fire to the body. They pin their heads together and Huerta momentarily seems to have the advantage with infighting, slapping atop Hirales' hairline before Hirales turns it around and starts landing those wide hooking shots. Good phonebooth action. BIG flurry from Hirales to seal or steal the round, depening on how you saw the first couple of minutes. Definitely a Hirales round, either way.

    29-28 Hirales

    Round 4

Hirales leads with rights to the body. Huerta is loosening his guard a bit more now, trying to dash in and jab Hirales before he can mount anything. They come together in a sort of half-clinch, keeping their hands free and working out of it but neither doing much quality work, leaning against each other head to head. Huerta appears to have copped a low blow and Pat Russell warns Hirales. Huerta comes back and does some good infighting, tapping the sides of Hirales ' head and digging some hooks to the belt line. Hirales tries to answer in kind but seems tired. Huerta lands a good solid left hook to the body. Huerta explodes with some hard punches after taking half a step back into mid-range. Back into the phonebooth they go. Hirales slaps with some hooks and lands a short uppercut inside. Back and forth, blow for blow, rock'em sock'em!!! Each eating lots of leather! Great stuff!

    Hmm.

The old, slug-first slug-later mountain man version of Ponce would be completely dismantled by Russell. The new & improved version? :think I honestly don't know. They've been slow to step Gary up, so it's hard to gauge whether he's ready for that big a leap in class.

    Round 5

Hirales lets one volley after another go, hitting lots of arm but outworking Huerta by a large margin. Huerta no longer has the sharpness in looking to time single heavy blows accurately and just doesn't have much snap on what he does throw. Pat Russell takes a point from Hirales. If there was a low blow it was lightning fast. HARD slapping hook across the face by Hirales. Huerta is chased across the ring, full-on sprinting. They clinch. Pat warns them to watch the heads. As soon as they come together Huerta tries to bury his head into Hirales shoulder and hang on. Hirales just shoeshines him until the bell.

Hirales wins the round, but with the point deduction it's 9-9

good point, DPDL has looked more educated as of late. I think he deserves another crack at a titlist( i think hasegawa would be an awesome/interesting fight). what fighter do you think would be the best for jr. to take on next? i feel like he's ready and confident enough for a real test- but agreed on not knowing whether he's ready for more

    Round 6

Huerta tries to bring his arms up over the top and pound away at Hirales' head on the inside. Hirales goes the other route, flipping uppercuts into Huerta's chest and clipping his chin with them. 1-2 from Huerta, arm punches. Hirales flurries as they merge into a clinch. Huerta holds and hits very softly with his right hand. Hirales gets back to flurrying after Pat breaks them up. Huerta is just blocking shots and looking totally gassed. Hirales keeps ripping hard hooks and fast combos, spinning his fists one over the other.

    Clear Hirales round, 10-9
