Ray Arcel is easily the best trainer of all-time. No trainer can even compare to an eighth of Arcel. He trained the likes of: James J. Braddock = GOOD Lou Nova = GOOD Buddy Baer = VERY GOOD Max Baer = GREAT Al Ettore = BORDERLINE GREAT Ezzard Charles = ALL-TIME GREAT Larry Holmes = ALL-TIME GREAT Georges Carpentier = ALL-TIME GREAT Maxie Rosenbloom = GREAT Bob Olin = VERY GOOD Tommy Yarosz = VERY GOOD Teddy Yarosz = BORDERLINE GREAT Freddie Steele = ALL-TIME GREAT Billy Soose = GREAT Ceferino Garcia = GREAT Tony Zale = GREAT/ BORDERLINE ALL-TIME GREAT Jackie Fields = GREAT Lou Brouillard = VERY GOOD Barney Ross = ALL-TIME GREAT Henry Armstrong = ALL-TIME GREAT Kid Gavilan = ALL-TIME GREAT Roberto Duran = ALL-TIME GREAT Jackie (Kid) Berg = ALL-TIME GREAT Benny Leonard = ALL-TIME GREAT Sixto Escobar = GREAT Frankie Genaro = VERY GOOD John Henry Lewis = ALL-TIME GREAT Al McCoy = GREAT That is 11 ATG's and many other great fighters. Show me a trainer that has even a tenth of that resume.
yea im thinking Arcel as well... Of course my question is with any trainer...how much did he develop....and how much was just due to his having a big name due to one lucky find..and then having big name fighters come to him?
I can't pick just one, but if I had to, it'd be Chappie Blackburn or Emmanuel Steward. You can't go wrong with either of them, unless you ignore their advice.
Great trainer ,but he did not work with Leonard until 1931 , during Benny's abortive comeback as a welter,at which point ,Leonard was allmost through, and fighting for a pension.
Freddie Brown trained Duran much more than Arcel did. Arcel was boss though, he would take over in corner, and would make sure he was in gym if reporters were around. He was great trainer, but Brown was as good or better with fighters, not anywhere near as good as Arcel with media. That counts for alot with what they write, and who they give coverage to.
By the way, Duran was already 95% developed when he came to states to train. Whoever his trainers were in Panama, they may be frogotten and unknown, but they sure were great.
Jimmy Deforrest (trainer of Jack Dempsey until the Willard-fight) deserves to be remembered, too. @ ecto55 It is good, that You have mentioned Whitey Bimstein. He worked with many great fighters and was for some time partners with Ray Arcel. Very interesting is your information about Bill Miller of Harlem. I never have heard about him till now. It is a pity that such men seem to have been forgotten.
A good list but I have to ask....Teddy Yarosz "Borderline great" while Max Baer, Billy Soose, Al McCoy and Georges Carp are "great"? You might wanna compare resumes on that one
