38-year-old former WBA/WBC cruiserweight champion Jean-Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s) will be fighting 38-year-old former WBC heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman (49-7-2, 40 KO’s) on May 7th in a WBA heavyweight title eliminator. The winner of the Mormeck vs. Rahman fight will then be facing World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye next.

There has been talk of Mormeck fighting Haye in place of Ruslan Chagaev, but that’s not going to be the case unless Haye is willing to wait until July or August to face the winner of Mormeck-Rahman at that time. It would be a terrible waste of time for Haye to do this, but at least he wouldn’t have to face Chagaev or the #2 WBA contender Denis Boytsov. Neither of those fights would be easy wins for Haye because Chagaev and Boytsov can punch a little.

Rahman has been fighting as a pro for the past 17 years and briefly held the WBC heavyweight title in 2006, but quickly lost the title in a 12th round knockout by Old Maskaev in the same year. Rahman has done little since then, beating mostly 2nd tier fighters and battling weight problems. Rahman challenged IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko for his title in December 2008, but was stopped in the 7th round of a one-sided contest. Rahman has won four consecutive fights since then, albeit against B and C level opposition.

Mormeck retired for two years after being stopped by Haye in the 7th round in November 2007 at cruiserweight. Mormeck then retired for two years and then came back in 20-9, winning three consecutive fights at heavyweight to get ranked at #8 by the WBA. At 5’11″, Mormeck is one of the shorter heavyweights in the division. He’s not particularly fast and his once impressive power didn’t carry up with him when he moved up to the heavyweight division. In short, Mormeck is an aging, slow, undersized heavyweight that has gone life and death with fringe heavyweights Fres Oquendo and Timur Ibragimov.

Rahman should have no problems beating Mormeck unless the fight takes place in France. In that case, Rahman may need a knockout to win. I had Oquendo and Ibragimov both beating Mormeck.

This is the direction that Haye will take. Haye is an idiot! I said it and I BELIEVE IT! If Haye the (coward) is going to wait till july to fight, why does he not grow a set of balls and fight either Klitschko?

Well if the WBA are willing to wait for this fight before forcing the mandatory, then I guess Haye can sign with Wlad after all. He can have a signed contract to fight Wlad completed by May 7th.

    Unification trumps mandatories.

Haye no longer has the excuse that his fans on this board have used. That if he waits till July to fight Klitschko, he'll lose his title. These are pathetic old fighters btw, why are they getting a mandatory? Time & time again, they have used this excuse. Now, is the time to sign to fight Klitschko. Now, no more excuses.

This fight is only in May, they can have the winner of the Rahman-Mormeck fight October or something like that, the winner of the Haye-Klitshcko fight, July 2. But of course Klitschko already manhandled Rahman, why would he need to again? Forget anybody else Haye: There is absolutely no reason for Haye not to fight a real fight, Wladimir. Sign for July 2nd now!! No more excuses from Haye fans, who up to this point have ironically blamed Wladimir for running.

I suppose the Haye fans will use the excuse that the fight can't be promoted properly if Wlad is fighting 9 weeks earlier. Maybe Haye himself will use this excuse

In which case he should fight Vitali. What will his excuse be to avoid him?

    There'll always be something...

I used to think having two Klitschkos as belt holders will eventually force Haye into fighting one of them, but all he does is offer to fight whoever is least able to fight him at that moment in time. If Vitali is free he'll probably want to fight Wlad again

if Haye sits on the sidelines and waits for the winner of this he becomes even lamer...

what would this be Rahmans 4th or 5th shot at a title? (sidenote i always wondered why rahman-lewis wasnt a trilogy)

Haye avoiding unification and defending against the Wlad-battered Rahman will be almost as nonsensical as the choice to fight Harrison.
