depends on the year. i'll be the first to say their fight at 175 should be completely discounted for these purposes a patient, technical counter puncher who destroyed the body at every opportunity against a physical phenom i see this going similar to the recent khan/maidana fight. jones dominates the first 6 rounds of the fight until mccallums early investment pays dividends. the second half is marked by mccallum landing the left hook more and more and jones potshotting from a distance, stealing rounds when he can mccallum closes the point gap and scores a knockdown along the way but jones pulls in through in the final round turning the fight back and going on the aggressive. his flurries give him the 12th round and the fight by SD
Not entirely. McCallum briefly showed he had some success with the overhand right, I feel that plays a part. I also think Jones controll of the range and tempo, with his fast movement and pot shotting. Probably lets him take a close decision with McCallums counter-punching allowing it to be close.
good point. someone like the body snatcher wouldn't rely entirely on one punch and the right could certainly play a factor
Roy wins a clear UD. He's just too fast. Even though McCallum is a superior ring general to the versions of Hopkins and Toney that Jones beat he's also physically inferior to them (in terms of speed and power). Jones' speed and unorthodoxy is just too much for him to deal with.
McCallum was ok. He was underrated when he was fighting and overrated now. He is in the middle of all that. The way he lost to Kalambay shows that Roy Jones would have easily outboxed him and nullified anything Mike could have done. Roy was better than all the guys who Mike beat.
i do to be honest. i think at 160 McCallum would landing one of those sweeping left hooks after timing and frustrating jones. it may be a wider decision for jones than i give him credit for but with someone as technically brilliant and iron chinned as mccallum, i see roy getting frustrated at his inability to knock him out or cocky at his early dominance. either way, mccallum has his moments imo
Toney/Hopkins were actually faster than McCallum so McCallum despite his great timing and shot selection is at even more of a disadvantage here
I think you do a truly great fighter a real disservice here. Agreed. Jones's speed would just be too much, the difference in speed would be insane here.
