Rewatched the Khan/Maidana...

That's how things are on ESB. Even if you present your views in an honest and polite manner, you're still prone to stern, and often childish, responses. So don't sweat it.

Khan's troubles all came from Maidana's overhand right and Khan's leaky defence. Not a good combination.

He was getting hit again and again by the overhand right. Why? Because he kept moving into it -- normally if you know the guy has a particularly powerful punch, you move AWAY from his strongest hand. Khan in theory should have been moving to Maidana's left, but nearly every time he got hit with a big punch, including the one that seriously hurt him in the tenth, it was because he was moving to Maidana's right, and thus straight into his overhand power shot. I'm sure Khan just lost his head in there due to the pressure, because Roach would never have advised him to do something like that. The shot that hit Khan in the tenth and almost led to a KO was almost a perfect copy of a shot that hit Khan in one of the earlier rounds -- a bit like how you could see Floyd landing the same check-hook on Hatton in the same place with the same set-up a round or two before it actually hurt him.

To be fair to Khan, it's probably not easy to remember to move to Maidana's left when Maidana is cutting off the ring and applying so much pressure...boxing theory is well and good, but it can all fall apart in seconds when you get in the ring. Credit to Khan just for surviving the onslaught, no idea how he managed it...although Ariza's conditioning surely played a key factor. Now that Ariza is fired, I dunno how things would go down if that scenario happened again. Maidana's team clearly had a gameplan of countering Khan's jab or other shots with sweeping rights, and it nearly paid off.

Khan needs to take a serious look at his defence. He was also eating the uppercut multiple times, just like Pacman against Clottey.

 

As a fan who was rooting for Marcos, I think Cortez actually helped Maidana in the last two rounds, because Khan was trying to hold on, and would choose to take Maidana's inside body punches over his winging overhand rights, so since Cortez kept breaking them up from the clinch unnecessarily, it gave Maidan more space to land his power punches. Maidana's inside punches to the side of Khan's body in the later rounds were ineffectual, only his overhand right caused serious damage.

 

Well on a same note Maidana was lucky the body shot landed with about 10 seconds left in the first.

I know...I was just talking about the tenth when Khan got seriously hurt when I meant he got caught and that **** just happens. Fighter gets hurt, and that **** happens, but he was indeed getting hit Maidana's overhand right over the jab in other rounds, as well as getting hit with uppercuts and bodyshots.

It wasn't a case of Khan getting too brawl-happy as people have claimed, it's a case of Khan having flawed defense and footwork.
