I am from Johnstown pa and Windber pa, (born in windber, lived first 6 years in johnstown, then lived in windber till in my 20's, now in Johnstown again) they are close to each other, Windber is considered to be essentally a part of the Johnstown Metro area.

Windber has existed since 1897, coal mining company town, at its height it had 10,000 residentes, today it has about 4,500 or so. I can't seem to find any pro boxers who have had Windber as a hometown, and it has never had a boxing gym or anything like that.

Johnstown has existed since the 1800, but only became a town of any size around 1860...heighest its population reached was over 50,000, today its a bit over 20,000.

Best Fighter from Johnstown pa is Terry McGovern, however, he was born here, and then moved to New York as a very small child, hence, he didnt learn boxing here at all.

Anyhow....I guess i will let my town take credit for Terrible Terry however.

So who is the best fighter from your home town?

Gustav "Bubi" Scholz I´d say. You could make a case for the infamous Sven Ottke though.

Leicester has Chris Pyatt (former World Champion middleweight boxer)
and Rendall Munroe (EBU and Commonwealth super bantamweight boxing champion)

you guys actually have more good chess players then boxers though...for a city of its size.

I have entered a handful of fights on Boxrec that took place in Windber in the early 1900s. Jack McClelland fought there as did Patsy Brannigan and a few other really good fighters. Johnstown had a pretty lively scene as well, with native son Joe Getz making a good name for himself all over PA.

My hometown? Well, for Los Angeles specifically you could nominate several fighters. For the San Fernando Valley, which is where I live, Bobby Chacon might have top honors.

I have to identify with Rendal Munroe because I worked as a Leicester bin man to pay my way through university!

yea allot of fighters fought in Johnstown at one time, but it didnt seem to have too many guys who actually CAME from johnstown.....mostly just some club level fighters. We currently have a cruiserweight fighter who i use to spar with a few years back (use to give him pretty good work back when i gave a **** and kept myself in shape) by the name of andres taylor.

He got into it when they reopened a gym in johnstown about 15 years ago..its tough though..very few kids will stick with boxing...kids would come down...if they lasted the workouts..they would often quit after the first sparring session. Now all the young punks wanna roll around on the floor and do mma.

again, McGoveren is a well known fighter, but he was basically just born in johnstown, not raised.

in the 1960's SRR and pep fought on the same card at the war memorial (where the movie slap shot was filmed)..they where basically well past it at that point.

Point Stadium has held some fights (its said babe ruth smashed it out the park in the 20's) the last pro fight took place their this past september. (point stadium is where the football scenes for the movie All the Right Moves was filmed) ps, both movies had plots that centered on how shitty the town was and how the lead characters are trying to get the hell out.

oh buster douglas fought here in the early 80's......some fighter from virgina had fought a few times in johnstown...was undefeated, kind of getting a name around here...becoming a local favorit....they brought Busther in and Douglas smashed the dude in one.
