and their both great fight. i've watched both those clips many times. 2 of my favourites. One of my favourite Cotto fights. FYI my 2 favourite active fighters are Cotto and Marquez, so i was never dissing him. I just used his Margo quittage (which is what it was) is an example of a good fighter deciding they can't compete any more, and there's no shame in that. Not every fighter is an Artuto Gatti.
and that's why he gets the stick i think. It was more for the comment after, than the actual fight i think.
cotto gave up but what did he say after the fight? "margarito won, i had nothing else to give, my children were crying" what did he say after/during the handwrap scandal? "i dont know if he used it against me but if he did he should take responsibility and face the consequences." no excuses. cotto after margo This content is protected ortiz after maidana This content is protected its scary to think what margo would do to ortiz.
Ortiz would have to be the least disgraceful quittage out of the bunch. Dirrell and Cintron were looking for ways out of the fight thinking that they were ahead on the scorecards. Alexander wasn't even getting beat up that badly and he didn't want to fight anymore. At least Ortiz was getting his ass raped and called it a day with his opponent receiving the victory by stoppage. All four are bad tho, that is assuming Cintron actually intended to jump out of the ring and have the fight stopped.
Ortiz WASN'T getting his ass raped, he was up on the scorecards and had knocked down maidana multiple times and was well in the fight.
It was a beating, I don't care what the scorecards said or the number of knockdowns there were. I'm surprised Ortiz even got off his stool after round 5.
i honestly don't think he did. I mean seriously. It was a 50/50 fight. He was giving as good as he gets. Maybe i'm giving him credit. But seriously, no way a pro boxer dives out of the ring in a fight that is 50/50 cos he can't be bothered or he wants out. Its funny to think he did but he slipped and fell out the ring. the ropes weren't on tight enough
There's no evidence that Cintron jumped out of the ring. In my opinion, Williams was getting his ass beat. It didn't look like he leaped out to me. I've had my speculations about whether Dirrell quit or not, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until some evidence comes out that he faked it. Alexander looked to me like he just quit, but after some thought, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as well. (as it looks like some Vaseline flew into his eye during that headbutt) Ortiz is the only undeniable quitter of the bunch. In a close fight (amazing fight), the minute he starts to get hurt to the body, he thinks he doesn't "deserve" to get beat up that way. Of this group, definitely Ortiz! I do think Duran is probably the worst instance of quitting I've ever seen. I like Duran and he's an excellent fighter, but that was pathetic. He basically threw a tantrum because Leonard was embarrassing him. Just goes to show that one quit doesn't make you a bad fighter.
He did. I believe Maidana was knocked down 3 times to Ortiz' 2? I am at work and can't watch the fight again but the fight reminded me of the later rounds between Cotto and Margo. Cotto was winning and clearly the better boxer but the momentum shift was very easy to see and the end became inevitable. When the bell rang to end round 5, did you still expect Ortiz to win the fight? Maidana was able to take Ortiz' best shots and continue to chase him around the ring and punish him, so what other outcome did you expect to see?
He blatantly lept out of the ring after getting hit with the first flush shot. Thought he would win on the cards probably. :yep
from the prefight videos about ortiz growing up on the street, overcoming adversity, putting his little brother into school etc etc made me believe ortiz would have the grit to out last maidana and stop him late or outwork him, i thought after round 5 (i think it was?) he would come out and fight his heart out.
