To coincide with the recent release of The Fighter, I think this is an excellent opportunity to remind ourselves about what happens after the lights and cameras have been turned off and fight night is over.

I cannot believe how many posters throw around the term "bum" so freely on ESB, which to me is a slap in the face to each and every fighter who has sacrificed and worked hard to compete in a sport we all claim to love.

Doesn't matter if your record is 30-0 or 20-10; champion or contender; or a PPV superstar or a local clubfighter, there should be some level of respect from fans.

HBO's pre-fight segment on Micky Ward's recovery after Gatti-Ward III. Enjoy:

Great post. People often forget how brutal a sport boxing is, and how much guts and determination it takes to be a fighter, especially a top-tier fighter.

great post man :good I completely agree with you, these guys really do put their lives on the line to entertain us, so they all deserve respect from doing something most of us won't ever do.

also, how cool was it that ward and gatti were in the same room in the hospital right after their fight

:thumbsup That's why you'll never see me calling a boxer a bum. Sometimes even boxers who have won a world title are called bums on this forum :patsch:patsch

Yes, most people don't realise that it takes months for the physical damage and mental trauma to heal. Thats why it is so important for a boxer to completely rest before resuming training again if they have been in a tough fight.

Great post indeed!! Boxing is a brutal sport and even though I use the expression "boxing game" quite often, I know it's not a game bc in a game u can not lose ur life, in boxing it happens.

Exactly I do have repsect for fighters generally but :

A - they get paid and paid well at the top end !

B - no one put a gun to their head and said " you have to be a prizefighter "

People get into this game for money and fame and while I dont want to see someone get hurt its a dangerous living and they know it.

I work in ship management and we have crewmen killed or injured regularly all to bring oil for your cars , where is the thread lamenting their pain ?

Great insight into what happens right after a fight. I've never really thought about that too much before.

Great to see Ward & Gatti together.

This is a boxing site, thus the reason for a great thread(on boxing!) like this one thats rare on ESB.

Check the ship management thread. You might find what your looking for.:good

No is ordinarily putting themselves in harms way, in the way that fighters do.

Think of it like rugby. Its a tough sport, and and occasionally you might catch a punch when the ref isnt looking.

Boxing, you know your going to have several hundred coming your way, from a trained fighter, the ref will be looking, and no one is going to stop it until one of you is unconscious, or you run out of time/heart/resistance/guts.

And I work in ship management too. And for sure we dont intentionally put anyone in to situations where we know they will get hurt. We do everything to prevent that.

I didnt say they dont deserve respect ( in fact i'm pretty sure i said the exact opposite ) but many of the posts above seemed to suggest a fighter cannot be critized becasue they do such a dangerous job.

My point stands , no one is making them do it and there are a tonne of equally dangerous jobs out there that no one thinks twice about it and

Of course we dont deliberatley put people in dangerous position but are you telling me no-one ever got hurt on one your ships ?
