Just to clarify from my point of view, I'm not suggesting fighters cannot be criticised; undertraining, poor technique, cherry-picking/ducking, unwarranted hype, not fighting to their potential, nonsense arguments in the media etc are all valid criticisms. My main issue is that the word "bum" implies that even though they've trained their asses off they are simply just taking up space and have achieved nothing in their lives just because they lost a fight(s).

It's like a sea captain going to up to a shipping dock worker and calling him a bum just because he didn't get a promotion after working his butt off for 15 years or calling him a bum because they weren't able to land a job with a bigger, higher profile company.

Even though that particular dock worker may not directly work with the captain, dock working is a necessity and calling them a bum is a slap in the face to all dock workers that also work hard yet reap various results. Same principle applies to boxers and how easily fans discard and insult boxers for the wrong reasons.

I think people can be critical without stooping to that level. We're not boxing promoters.

Lol thanks for the nautical example !

I understand what you mean, i get equally annoyed at the way terms like bum and runner etc are tossed around on here ( usually by those who have no idea what it takes to be a pro at any sport, let alone one with the added violence of boxing ) People who do that are idiots , all the explanation in the world wont stop that.

I was just trying to say they know what they're getting into and they also get paid. Do you think Mickey Ward would want you seeing that footage and feeling sorry for him ?

That said , your point stands , folks who through terms like that around willy nilly are chumps who need educated

It's not really about feeling sorry though... again, respect is the right term. No one here is going "aww, poor fighter, he got really hurt." More like "damn, that fighter took a hell of a beating, and he chose to be in that profession, I respect him for going through that to earn a living." I mean, the fact that they "chose" this profession to earn a living is respect worthy because very few people would do that simply because they could get seriously hurt.

Not really the best quotes but you get my point

Yeh I understand what you mean. I would be worried if a warrior like Micky Ward, let alone any boxer expected fans to feel sorry for them because they got hurt chasing their dreams/doing something they love. We can feel sorry for those in alot worse situations who don't have any control. Respect is all thats needed, and I think Ward has earnt it.

    Great thread

Anyone who uses the term bum has never boxed IMO, anyone who has boxed would know the dedication and toughness you need to step through the ropes, every boxer deserves respect especially the journeymen who take knocks week in week out for a few quid !!

I dont ever like the term bum but its an interesting point.

I guess (for me) a bum is someone who disrespects the sport , be it through lack of effort or poor sportsmanship

Judah is a bum. Peter Buckley is not

to take 17 beatings and still have the heart to come back for one more?:patsch

its sad that 99% of people on this board have never boxed (ignoring the 100s of bullshitters saying they have)

With one solid round of sparring believe me your opinion would change. that numb feeling in your head the ringing in your ears, the feel of a glove scrapin your actual eye ball - and thats without taking into account the punishment on your body from simply exercising that hard

I was thinking about posting something like this myself, when I was watching Friday Night Fights last week.

Something to give some perspective to the posters on here who trash Gatti/Ward as "C Level fighters" and guys like Emmanuel Augustus, Francois Botha, Brian Minto and Matthew Hatton as bums.

I work out with a boxing coach at a boxing gym (not a fitness center), Shamrock Boxing in Covington KY. Being 37, overweight and in love with boxing, I train hard and would love to get to a level where I could compete in Masters Division amateur fights. I have sparred with newbies and some who have had or are training for amateur fights. Some rounds I did well, others I got beat up. It happens.

Currently, our best fighter just won the state Silver Gloves. That kid is good, obviously.

Who knows what could happen if he keeps working? He might rack up 50 amateur fights and become a professional who trains nightly and runs marathons in his spare time and put together a record of 9 (6)-1-0.

Then, just maybe, if he's lucky be picked up on something televised. If he keeps winning he might find himself on Friday Night Fights. Then, maybe he will find himself on the canvas....3 times in the first round...and TKO'ed.

Then, moments later keyboard warriors on ESB are yammering away about him being a bum, even though they never have been in the ring themselves.

If that kid from my gym grew up to be Jon Schmidt (who got smoked on FNF last week) that's exactly what would have happened.

Just sayin... It takes a lot of hard work, luck and connections just to make it to that level. To move from there to something as great as the Olympics or a Regional title should be a big deal, but on here if you are not a top 10 contender for a world title then you are a bum. :patsch

Incidentally, I was just reading that Jon Schmidt has another fight scheduled 2/13. Good for him.

good post, but remember people are judging relatively, and certainly not compared to their own 'abilities'.
it's a given luxury of armchair sportsmen i suppose and will always be there.
