I agree about Floyd Sr being an overrated trainer.

I'll throw Kevin Cunningham out there, I see the exact same style with Devon and Spinks. I feel a trainier should teach sound fundamentals and good punching technique and then allow their fighter to develope their own style. I may be going out on a limb, considering I don't know Kevin, Devon, or Spinks.. but it seems Kevin Cunningham has one particular style to teach that he tries to mold ALL of his fighters into it..

Devon and Cory both have a natural 'slickness' to them, but the excessive circling, flicking jab, and love tap punches all seem to go hand in hand with the Cunningham boxing style.

Maybe he spends more time perfecting cool little slipping moves and less time on sound punching technique.

  9. Kelly Pavlik is the first to come to mind for me when reading the thread title. Leow needs to get back to doing driveways, he's good at that.

De La Hoya IMO would be a WAY more effective fighter if he could use his right hand better(right leads, maybe?) The hook often times comes off even better when set up by a good right hand, no? De La Hoya to me has an amatuerish style, I can imagine Floyd Sr was trying to make him into more of a boxer puncher..

Style overhauls don't always work, I think it depends just as much on the fighter as it does the trainier, as there has to be good chemistry. Barrera comes to mind

Alot of people talking about Pavlik but I doubt he would be where he is without Leow. In addition, I admire the fighter who stays with his coach from cradle to grave(amateur to retirement).. I think it shows loyalty and that the boxer also takes responsibility for what happens in the ring.

I know some of us can recall when a fighter would lose a fight and then blame it all on their trainer. Kinda goes with the saying "I can show you the water, but can't make you drink it."

  12. Don't get me wrong, Jack got him this far.. But at a certain point the same **** happens with top fighters that stayed with their hometown trainer.. The fighter gets burnt out. It happened to Hatton, Mosley, Morales, Spinks, the list goes on...

Don't you think Pavlik would benefit from a new situation with new fire under his ass? Pavlik needs to hire Manny Steward. Or someone who can make that jab/right hand thing work for him again... :deal

No doubt, Pavlik definitely needs something new, but to put it all on the coach I think is dismissive. Jack can tell and show him all the right things, the choice will always be Kelly's though. If that fire is missing, maybe he needs to look within himself to reignite the flame.

Anyone can sit down and give their opinion on whats right and wrong, Manny Steward's eyes aren't any better then mine or yours. I agree with you though, I think some fighters could definitely benefit from a new trainer, but alot of times its bigger then that.

Another set of eyes is always good though..
