How Big Was Carmine Vingo?

Nobody threw a right hand like that, so wide but with all power. I think his short reach allowed him to get away with it so often... but damn I would hate to be hit by it.

 

Vingo looks like a solid guy and at 6"4 he has big shoulders and arms and does not looks slim. The thing is he is going toe to toe with Rocky Marciano, a tough task.

My uncle thought Vingo had the talent to make it to the top, I don't know if they knew him in the amateurs or the pro's or both but Vingo was already fighting in some big venues in NY like MSG and Yankee stadium.

I happened to know Carmine in the late 70's as a group of us would bowl over at Gun Post lanes almost every week. Carmine wasn't overly tall that I remember, maybe 5' 11. Now this was many years later so the weight wouldn't be measurable. He was still thin. Everyone loved him, always pleasant, but noticeably affected by the injury. He didn't really talk much in any depth about the fight or Rocky. He was very quiet as a rule. He made it very clear, Marciano was a great person and fighter. I had seen a special on Marciano the other night and it made me remember ole Carmine. Googled him up and came across this. Thought I would weigh in having known him a little.

I get the chills seeing this photo, because I was at this angle sitting close in the first row of the side balcony at MSG. There was not a whisper in the crowd for we feared for Vingo's life. This photo doesn't show Carmine's leg twitching violently, as he lay on his back before freddie Brown shown above came to his aid. Soon after this photo the ambulance took him directly across the street
to Polyclinic Hospital where they saved his life. I feel emotional now, need a bracer...

 

It's amazing to think that you very nearly saw the career of Rocky Marciano end right there.

 

Louis was soft-looking and visibly overweight in the 230s, at least in his exhibition against Layne. Other later writeups describe him as "plump" and "well padded at 235." Let's not act as if he was a big heavy who melted down-- you can tell by his frame and physique that he was basically a cruiserweight/heavyweight tweener.

 

Exactly,and this same idiot say that the perfect weight for foreman was 217, when this one is the case where the fighter could carry 232 pounds pretty well and he was drained at 217. He had much wider frame than louis who had very narrow shoulders and not huge thorax.joe louis looking good at 235 lmao.i remember janitor saying that dempsey looked 220 ...
