I high jumped 1m 80cm at 15yrs which is around 5ft 10in and there were others in my age group doing 2m 00cm when I went to regional level.

    Honestly, it's no great shakes.

i can see your point bb (and your passion) but the fact is that while robinson may have avoided holman williams or burley, his resume can't really be questioned. Dempsey does not have that luxury. unfortunately, harry wills has become a defacto legacy fight that never happened. dempsey's ledger is solid and i'm enjoying learning more about it every day but he simply does not have those stand out names, those challenges that louis, robinson, ali and others have on theirs. drawing the colour line (regardless of reasons) has seriously hurt his legacy and i can't say it's all undeserved.

    (From the first page photo's)

Given those two photo's, if Jeffries is the Tubby guy on the right, the other dude must be Sasquatch.
Hows about the footwear. The guy in the car must have been his shoe-shine.

If you mean the fat Jeffries blowing out of his arse doing roadwork in that picture a few pages back ..... then no, I don't think he could high jump 5ft 10 inches.

But the prime athletic muscular specimen when he was heavyweight champ in the early 1900's ..... most definitely.

My children compete in track and field and this coming Summer, I will see 14 year old GIRLS high jumping 5ft 10 :nut

Would you say that girls reach athletic maturity at an earlier age than boys?

J,good to hear from you. But we are NOT discussing the resume of Dempsey, Louis or Robinson. Not at all. We are , or I am, discussing the sober fact that Dempsey, DID sign to fight Wills. Did fight black fighters before. If Dempsey didn't hook up with Wills later on,Louis did NOT Hook up with worthies like
Lee Q murray, Harry Bobo, Lem Franklin,Jimmy Bivens [while champ]. and Ray Robinson AVOIDED fighting the great black fighters of his time, such as
    Charley
Burley, Holman Williams, Eddie Booker, Coco Kid, Bert Lytell etc,
each BETTER than most of Robinson's lesser skilled white opponents..
each one of these guys deserved a money shot and Robinson denied them the
opportunity. Why J can a Robinson avoid the barbs and arrows that Dempsey,
long dead is subjected to ??? You say Dempsey does not have the "name"opponents that they have..so if a robinson or louis can have a better
opponent legacy then they can disriminate, and decide which of their prosective opponents, they deem as too dangerous to fight, so they get a "free pass" to avoid them, whilst a Dempsey is tarred and feathered for never
fighting a Harry Wills,[though they did sign once]. Can only a caucasian
be singled out for discriminating against their fellow man ? My mind and heart tells me NO. Think about it J. Bigotry has nothing to do with the calibre of fighter you are. What's good for Dempsey, should be good for Louis or Ray Robinson, I say...Color is neutral...:good

In my experience, yes. But they rarely realise that potential as seniors, which is where it counts.

:thinkhmm interesting take on the race issue but i would disagree about the discussion...i think it very much IS about resumes. at the end of the day, dempseys reign is defined more by who he DIDN'T fight rather than did. louis, to be fair, has the "bum of the month" named after his competition (or lack thereof) taking on only two black challengers and many unworthy white ones (and while race shouldn't factor into the equation it simply does as white fighters often brought in more money with less risk). louis does not get away with his selection and is derided for it. even still, the walcotts, conns and schmeling on his ledger outweigh much of the attacks. robinson though cannot be compared with dempsey: look at who robinson did fight in the stead of those worthy fighters (basilio, fullmer, olson, lamotta, maxim, gavilan, etc.). his resume is still amongst the top 5 of all time. look at who dempsey fought in the place of his number 1 challenger...there's no comparison for me. dempsey gets flack because he picked and chose to fight smaller, white opponents instead of dangerous, black opponents. i hate making it a race issue, and it's really more of a legacy issue for me. NO champion should avoid the best but robinson fought some of the greatest fighters of all time, louis fought many of the best during his reign, dempsey simply did not

btw: love these discussions bb, keep em coming:bbb
