:good thats how I see it too. For years I read of this established opinion that makes for good copy, the twinkle toes routine, a fancy dan who had it in the bag then blew it in the "unlucky for some" round 13. What a shock i got when i saw the fight!

The truth was the smart boxer was forced to fight like a wild cat.

Conn was fighting like hell to keep louis off him, he did box and move when he could but billy was OFTEN trapped where he was forced to fight his way out of trouble. conn was one tough dude that night.

billys heaviest attack in the last round was in retaliation AFTER louis trapped him, he was actualy fighting for his life but shot his bolt.

J, you are trying to defend the indefensible. To deny that Ray Robinson did not give a Burley, Holman Williams, Eddie Booker, Cocoa Kid, etc,a fight with him for a lucrative payday, because they were "moving "up to middleweight
is bogus.Eddie booker fought Jimmy McDaniels welter, who i saw fight
Robinson at MSG. Booker fought McDaniels as welterweight also.Cocoa Kid' who Robinson avoided, was fighting welters Jackie Wilson, Bobby Britton,
Holman Williams, in 1942. Holman Williams fought Cocoa Kid and other welterweights of that time also. Some of these guys above fought the same welterweights, like izzy Janazzo, Jackie Wilson ,that Robinson fought as a welterweight. Besides ,Robinson was FIGHTING middleweights such as Vic Dellicurti,Jake LaMotta, Jose Basora, etc, but overlooked "murderers row ".
How convenient of Robinson to fight some middleweights, but not some
welters as mentioned above. Because the risk of tackling these great black fighters, was too great for Robbie. I can't really blame him, but facts are facts.

Ernie Terrell, as the 'second' best heavyweight in 1965/1966/1967.
Before his fight with Muhammad Ali, February 6, 1967.

    1) Though undefeated since April 3, 1962 (Nearly a 5-year run)
he was 15-0-0 (4 KO's), and showed at best (poor punching power).

    2) Though tall at 6' 6", his average weight was 203 lbs. for those 15-bouts.

    3) He was really small-framed, and not big or muscular.

    4) In his last 9-bouts, he was 9-0-0 (1 KO). And that Knock-out was over
Light Heavyweight Bob Foster (183 lbs.).

    5) In his previous 3-title bouts, he was shaken by each opponent. Eddie Machen,
George Chuvalo and Doug Jones. All considered mediocre power-punchers.

Who was the second best HW if Terrell wasnt? Being shaken in important fights, or having an average punch, doesnt mean you arent the best at that time.

My point exactly, the whole lot was mediocre.

    All Ranked 1 thru 15.
And Thad Spencer beat Ernie Terrell equally as much as Muhammad Ali.

Where's Tony Alongi when you need him........

Cassius Clay could have beaten Ingemar Johansson in 1961.

    Complete publicity stunt.

B, I am pretty sure it was Samuel Berger. I have seen photos of Berger who was a friend and close sparring partner of Jeffries. I could be wrong, but i doubt it...
