Yes, there was brief sparring sesion with head-gear and pillow gloves.
It was in Miami Beach, in February 1961, just before the
    Clay vs. Fleeman fight.
and Patterson vs. Johansson III fight.

Nothing more than 5-minutes of light-sparring. It proved nothing.

Nothing really, other than the fact that though Ernie Terrell was the
'second best heavyweight' during that time, the moniker 'second best heavyweight'
wasn't worth the paper it was written on.

    #2 of a mediocre lot.

i agree that it gets overblown in it's significance. doesn't mean ali wouldn't have beat johansson, just doesn't mean he would have.

It is legit. They sparred for a round and Clay made a fool out of Ingo. Whether you think this have any bearing on how an actual fight would pan out is another thing, but the sparring story is true.

The best contender during Jeffries' reign was Jack Johnson. Not bad. Too bad he didn't face him, though. The best during Johnson's was... Langford? Anyhow, didn't get a shot. The best contender during Dempsey's reign was a really good 'un. But you know what? Didn't help him get a shot. The best during Louis was Walcott. Class. He arguably went 1-1 with Louis, though. The best during Marciano's reign was one of two former LHWs in their 30 to 40's. One of them had two losses in his last four fights, the other would be easily beaten by a very young Patterson not long afterwards.

    Etc, etc.

This is about the myth that most HW champions succesfully defended their crown against an impressive rival, by the way.

J,it is my honor to debate our earnest opinions, without rancor. Please remember that Dempsey truly never hooked up with but, one viable black contender, and that was Harry Wills,[who I once saw as a spectator in Stillmans gym in the 1940s] . Aside from this Manassa Jack licked everyone
of his opponents, before his 3 year layoff. What more can one ask for ?
    Keep punchin J....

Are you serious,,,,,,,Approximately 5-minutes of light-sparring, and you come up with, he made Ingo look like a fool.

You want to buy a bridge?

That was all staged, by fight publicist Harold Conrad.
Harold was so good, and he fooled you too Bokaj.

Now how the hell did you come with that one.

A brilliant fight publicist comes up with a gimmick, that most people bought.

And I follow that up with a comment on 'myths and facts'.

Now I have hatred for Ali.

What direction did you take to connect the dots on that one.:huh

People who was there and who actually witnessed it said he made Ingo look like a fool. Can't really see why Ingo would agree to be made look foolish.

Harold Conrad's own words: "The promoters decided to bring Ingemar to Miami to sell some tickets for the fight ... We got to Miami, but there weren't any sparring partners. So I asked Angelo: Do you have anyone who can work with this guy?" (Angelo brings Clay over and he and Ingo start sparring) "Johansson had a great right hand, but two left feet, and Cassius started dancing, popping him. Now remember, Johansson was getting ready to fight for the heavyweight championship of the world, but Cassius handled him like a sparring partner."

Sportswriter Gil Rogin: "When he sparred with Johansson, it was the greatest defensive boxing exhibition I've ever seen. Here was a man, a boy really, who'd had four professional fights and he made a ****** out of Johansson."

So, this is the official version. Them sparring for a round and Clay surprising everyone by making Ingo look foolish. I agree that this was only a rounds sparring session and we don't exactly what bearing it would have had for how an actual fight would have turned out. But I can't believe that Ingo would agree to let Clay look good on his expense.
