just covered this fight on my blog http://boxingscorecard.blogspot.com/ first things first - what a fight and effort by dave tiberi. he should have got the title on that performance , i had tiberi the winner although when collating scores i had it a little closer but still a clear winner. i wonder if Toney would have been the same great fighter he was if he didnt recieve the gift he got vs Tiberi?? comments welcome
i saw an interview where tiberi said he knocked back an million dollar payday for a fight but not against toney??? also im sure in the same interview tiberi was offered 600k for a rematch but said no weird as he had nothing to lose great fight though and yes a total robbery
Yep, I couldn't say it any better. Toney gassed after the 2nd or 3rd round and looked awful. He was pretty hot and cold throughout his career but when he was cold, he was cold.
Tiberi got robbed and many people acknowledge that when they speak of this fight. Even Toney said he didn't win that fight.
Tiberi was offered a rematch but refused it because he felt that he should have been declared the IBF champion. My thoughts on this is that he was intittled to walk away from the rematch but he should not have been named the champion. Judging a boxing match is subjective and you are going to get bad decisions this was not the first one and it was most certintaly not the last. Unless you think that there was a conspericy against Tiberi the fight should be loked at as a lucky break for Toney and nothing more.
It absolutely has a bearing on his capabilities, not an enormous effect but it can't be ignored. We know he was capable of coming in ill-prepared and delivering a club fighter performance. Thus we later get that **** effort versus Drake Thadzi.
cheers for the comment mate toney did become a great fighter although i wonder how better he would have been with better weight control?
Tiberi was unlucky not to get the decision, and kudos to the man he had his principles. As for having nothing to lose in a rematch... If Toney dominated him, everyone would of just put the first fight down as a blip. By not having a return match, Tiberi keeps the unlucky decision in the boxing fans thoughts.
i agree im sure that toney would have trained harder and made the 160 limit much easier rematch i think would have been a good fight as tiberi style wouldnt have changed
One of the worst decisions in recent memory. only can think of two others who were so disturbed by a bad decision. who never fought again. Hagler against Leonard. & Zarate against Pintor.
