Maybe not an obvious choice ,but I like the way Duran took the sting off shots by just turning his head a fraction.
I agree completely with your dad.....Great fighter your dad ! I love his performance against Caldwell Al !
A solid defensive fighter, but not much more than that, in my opinion. Could be made to look very good at moments and quite poor at others, depending on the opponent. Then again that likely had a bit to do with his offensive-minded style. Very well-schooled, just a little lacking as far as defensive reflexes go. He had similar problems with his footwork. Very well placed and well-balanced, just a little on the slow side.
Yes, he didn't have the reflexes of Benitez, Loche etc., but when he slippped punches he did it with perfect balance and economy and was therefore always in a position to counter if an opening was left. That for me is the essence of good head movement.
Everyone that I can think of has been mentioned I think. Pep, Benitez, Locche, Frazier, Armstrong, Sweet Pea, James Toney, Ali... I kinda wanna say Jerssey Joe because he's had some moments, but I wouldn't put him up there with the best ever head movement. As far as the last 20 years there doesnt seem like too many. Nonito Donaire is pretty good at slipping and countering, B Hop I guess, Floyd can slip punches pretty welll too.
Him and Toney were missing quite a bit against each other and that was a past prime Mccallum against a prime Toney. Mccallum does get underrated defensively and yes he was effective at bodypunching but he was a genius too. You're right, he wasn't flashy but precise and chose his spots well and evade shots at the same time. Great, smooth fighter and a joy to study.
